Berlin 2005 - Page Text Content

FC: Berlin 2005

Ah, Berlin... I visited the city as part of my language trip in Europe, in the summer of 2005. My second time there. The city is at once profound and, in German, schrecklich, the way Rilke describes angels are. The capital city of the modern Germany is also the stage of much modern history: the war, the blockade, and the fall of a wall.

I arrived in Frankfurt first. Instead of taking a transit flight to Berlin, I took ICE, the high-speed train. It was fast, efficient and comfortable.

 Frankfurt Train Station

 The Victory Column

... and the Wall (where it used to be)

 The magnificent Martin-Gropius-Bau

The last few hundred meters of the Wall preserved

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe A controversial monument designed by Peter Eisenman and Buro Happold. It consists of 2,711 concrete slabs. One can walk among them. Opened to the public in 2005.

 Brandburg Gate in the Evening

Alexanderplatz Train Station and the World Clock on the plaza.

Currywurst (curried sausage), the genuine Berlin snack !

 Transportation in Berlin

Catching up with ye olde friends... in Berlin! | Above: Dr. Tai holding a copy of the Basic Law of Germany. Left: Vanvan and me

 With the classmates

A fruit stand at Ostkreuz Station
