Cakes Gone Wild - A Caking Journey - Page Text Content

FC: Cakes Gone Wild My Journey into Caking

1: About Me After an offhanded remark while watching The Food Network Challenge about how "easy" that would be to do and a "I know you could do it Honey" from my husband, I set out to teach myself cake decorating. Well, it ain't all that "easy" but on the following pages you will see my journey. Thank you for taking a peek. I have always felt robbed in any kind of creativity whatsoever, but this has awakened in my a real satisfaction and sense of accomplishment in artistry. Everything I have learned so far has been learned from YouTube and others who share their talents via the Internet

2: My First Cake

3: This was my very first attempt at cake decorating....YIKES!! I was just throwing together a mish mash of techniques with no real thought to color or design. I was completely mortified!! I call this "My Things I Learned Cake" But perserverance won out...mostly cuz I knew it couldn't get much worse

12: Marshmallow Fondant Recipe | 1 16 oz bag mini marshmallows 1 2lb bag powdered sugar 2 tblsp water 1 tblsp light corn syrup 1-2 tsp flavor extract (vanilla, almond etc) Gel Paste Colors (optional) small amount of vegetable shortening Grease microwave safe bowl and large spoon with vegetable shortening. Pour marshmallows into bowl, add water, corn syrup and flavors. Microwave on high until marshmallow is fully melted, do this in 30 second intervals, stirring each time. When marshmallow is fully melted you can add gel paste until you get desired color. Add 3-4 cups of powdered sugar to the melted marshmallow in the bowl. Stir until well incorporated.

13: Ma | Add 1 cup powdered sugar to flat smooth work surface. Coat hands well with vegetable shortening. Turn out sugar/marshmallow dough onto surface, knead. Continue to knead until the remaining adding remaining sugar until all is incorporated. Double wrap dough in lightly greased saran wrap and then store in zip lock bag removing as much air as possible from bag before sealing. Let rest overnight. DO NOT REFRIGERATE. *Sugar used in this amount acts as a preservative, it will bind the water molecules thereby making bacterial growth nearly impossible.
