Book Summary | There are two main characters in this book. The chapters are about two kids named Debbie and Hector who are both 14 years old and how there lives 'criss cross' in the book. Debbie wished something good would happened to her soon. Meanwhile, Hector felt that life was rearranging itself and he felt like he was changing, growing up. In the summer, a lot of things happened to Debbie and Hector. They live in a place called Seldom; it's a regular kind of town. Most of the story takes place either outside or in someone's house.

Hector: | First Hector and his sister Rowanne go to a coffee house and listen to live music. Hector decides he really wants to play guitar; so he signs up to have guitar lessons. At guitar lessons he meets a girl named Meadow who he really likes. Also he meets a kid named Dan Persik. Hector continues playing guitar and got pretty good at it. Hector thinks he likes Meadow a lot and she likes him too (well he thinks so). Hector goes to a place where people dump there trash. (It's kind of a river/creek.) He wants it to be like a special place for him and Meadow, but that doesn't work out very well. After a while, at the fair, he sees Meadow...holding hands with Dan Persik. So now Hector's heart is crushed. At the end, he gives Debbie her necklace he found and they both look at each other in the eyes and they both got what they wanted.

Debbie: | Debbie likes to hang around with her friends, Patty, Lenny, Hector, and Phil. She likes to hang around Patty the most. Debbie wishes on her necklace that something good would happen to her. She losses her necklace. One day while she was going to Lenny's truck to listen to a radio show, (that happens to be called criss cross) no one showed up except for herself. So Lenny taught her to drive a stick shift instead. Mrs. Bruning wants Debbie to help her around her house since she is very old. So Debbie does help her and comes a few times a week. Mrs. Bruning's grandson came to visit her. Since she's elderly, Peter (her grandson) decides to stay with his grandmother for a few days to take care of her. In the morning, Debbie comes over to work at | (continued on next page)

Debbie | Mrs. Bruning's house. Peter and Debbie meet. Then they become somewhat friends. When Mrs. Bruning gets up, she doesn't look very well so with Debbie's driving skills, she drives her to the hospital. (She couldn't call 911 because she hadn't paid her bills. Then Peter and Debbie become good friends and decide to go on a trip to a city they haven't been to before on a bus. They have a really good time. Unfortunately, Peter has to leave and he may not come back. So now Debbie's really sad. She goes to the fair and sings songs with Hector and she said they sang like two birds flying for fun. Debbie and Hector both look into one another's eyes and their paths crossed, but they missed each other by a second.

My favorite part of the book was at the end when Debbie and Hector go to the Fair and at night when they caught fireflies, Hector played his guitar and Debbie sung along. I liked when Hector and Debbie's eyes met and they looked at each other. I liked this part because it gives you a feel-good-feeling and then the character got what they wanted.

If I were a new character in the book, I would be Hectors best friend because he'd be able to tell all his problems and worries to me. Also he'd know what to do and how to act because I'd tell him that. I'd also give him advice on things in life. I would also be friends with the rest of Hectors friends. Also, I'd be in Hectors guitar class.
