My expectations for the new house not being met has inspired me to create dreams of the future life that I would like to lead.
My dissatisfaction with the new house has made me self-conscious about everything. I have developped the feeling that I need to fit in even if it means not conveying my true personality.
Because of my self-consciousness, I am doing everything I can now to break free from the conotations of my name and my lifestyle.
I spend a lot of my time observing my friends actions and lives. Doing this helps me learn much about life and its consequences. | I have seen the good and the bad in life.
I am now becomes sexually eager, and at the same time sexually scared.
I now know that positive things can be outweighed by negative outcomes.
During my time on Mango St. I have seen the beauty of life in its most simplistic form.
Key Page Dreams - When Esperanza saw that this "Dream-House" was really a dump, it made her want her own amazing house. She did not see the house for what it stood for (a better life). and did not realize that her dreams did come true with this house. Self-Consciousness - Esperanza becomes self-conscious which represents her lack of pride and appreciation. She is scared that she will not fit in how she really is. Freedom - Esperanza begins to realize that her self-consciousness is not good. She feels like she should be proud of who she is and tries to break free from the connotations of her name (she wasnamed after her great grandmother who was tricked into marriage and lived a terribly sad life.) Observations - Esperanza observes her friends on Mango St.'s lives. She sees the hardships and problems that most of them have to face and learns from them. Seeing how tough some of her friends live's are makes her not take what she has for granted. Heart and Broken Heart - Esperenza longs to have a man in her life and enjoys when boys see her and look at her. However, she is also scared because of what happens with her friends promiscuous behavior and the fact that people on Mango St. use men as an escape. Beauty Products and Cross Out Sign - This artifact represents how being beautiful on Mango St. is not always a good thing. Esperanza's friend Rafaela is so beautiful that her husband locks her inside when he is gone. Esperanza's other friend Sally is beaten by her Father because he fears how beautiful she is and wants to make her uglier. These experiences make Esperanza modest. Magnifying Glass - Esperanza realizes that she has learned so much about life living on this poor street. Mango St. makes her really appreciate the beauty in life. Although she wishes very much to leave Mango St. she also wants to come back some day and help those less fortunate than her.
