FC: Our Solar System
Mercury is the first planet in the solar system. It has no atmosphere and no known satellites.
Venus is the second planet from the sun and the hottest. It has a thick atmosphere that causes the planet to reach temperatures of up to 400* F.
Earth is the third planet from the sun. It is the only planet known to contain life.
Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. Olympus Mons, the tallest mountain in the solar system, stands at about 78,000 feet.
The Asteroid Belt is located between Mars and Jupiter. It contains irregulary shaped chunks of debris called asteroids. Scientists believe the asteroids are the pieces of a planet that never formed.
Jupiter is the fifth planet from the sun and the largest. One day on Jupiter is equal to about nine Earth hours.
Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun. The rings around Saturn are made out of dust and ice particles. Some of the pieces are about a mile wide!
Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun. Scientists believe it was tipped on its side after being hit by a large celestial object.
Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun. Its blue color is caused by methane gases absorbing red light and reflecting blue light into space.
Pluto is now considered a dwarf planet. Since its orbit is elliptical in nature, it is sometimes located inside of Neptune's orbit.
Hope you enjoyed learning about the solar system!
