FC: Should there be uniforms in schools? | Made by: Courtney Rouse
"Uniforms should be required if it would mean that, teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets". - President Bill Clinton
When you wake up late for school, how many times have you just stood there, trying to figure out what to wear? It happens to everyone once in their life, and after awhile it does get frustrating. In 1992, Long beach, California became the first urban district to require elementary and middle school students to wear uniforms (public school uniform statistics).
Wouldn't it be easier if you didn't have to worry about that less? Many kids say "no way" because it doesn't look "cool". But actually, uniforms in public schools should be enforced because it eliminates wardrobe competition and the overall violence in schools is lowered.
Though many would argue that uniforms are too expensive in this economy, they are much cheaper than the expensive clothing that parents purchase for their children (Will school uniforms help curb student violence). | Reason 1: Students' self-esteem and price | when kids walk in the first day, many others immediately feel intimidated by a students' $175 jeans that they're wearing.
Teenagers are always looking for the "newest thing" to come up in clothing. Whether that article of clothing is expensive or not. And what comes with that is parents worry if they have enough money for their child to be able to have those clothes. And when they're not able to do that, their child would now be afraid of being made fun of because they don't have those particular clothes. | Uniforms can improve students' self-esteem because students look happier when they don't feel surpassed by other students' clothes (Should you have to wear a uniform?).
Reason 2: Reduced violence | Students clothing no longer have the possibility of being stolen (Should students be required to wear uniforms in school?) | Though not that common in some schools, one of the things that are stolen most of the time is clothing such as jackets, things that are misplaced a lot.
Students sometimes, unknowingly, wear a color that is associated with a gang. Enemies of that gang assume that they are part of that gangs' group, which is what usually starts a fight. | It usually starts when students wear similar colors of competing gangs (Should you have to wear a school uniform?)
Opposing Viewpoints | "An invasion of parental rights and duties."- Marie S. Myers(there's something about a uniform) "Teenagers would continue to want nice after school clothes." "Students are unable to show their personalities and individuality." "Parents would have to purchase both regular clothes and uniforms."("What to wear? Should students be required to wear uniforms in school?")
Conclusion | My opinion is that uniforms would benefit all schools, not just private and other schools. It makes students want to got to school and helps them become more sociable. Both parents and students disagree saying that it doesn't show "individuality" and supposedly violates students rights to dress however they want to (within the schools dress codes). Students would have to "think outside of the box" in order for their individuality to show more. Also because violence regarding clothing is reduced. I think it is a better choice instead of parents spending their money to pay for clothing and it gets stolen by other students.
