6: Kino is a poor Indian pearl diver who lives with his common-law wife in La Paz. He is too poor to afford a proper marriage ceremony. | While diving for pearls, Kino finds "the greatest pearl in the world." | Characters

7: Juana is Kino's wife. When her small son is stung by a scorpion, Juana prays to her people's ancient gods and to the Christian God that Kino will find a pearl so that she can pay a doctor to care for the baby.
