Introduction | In this scrapbook you will be seeing subjects that were mentioned in the the famous song 'We didn't start the Fire" by Billy Joel. This song is all about historic and influential events around the world. These topics are in the following scrapbook are to show you an idea of the year 1961 in the song.

The Berlin wall was part of various important events that made 1961 a significant year. The British Prime Minister thought Europe was separated by an “Iron Curtain”. When the Berlin wall was built it caused many controversial thoughts. Some immediate effects that came after the Berlin wall being built were the immigration and escaping of one side to the other. First, two million Germans went to the democratic side of Germany (west). Yet it is not like it is the first time this ever happens. As mentioned before, 1961 was known as the year that the Berlin wall had plenty of crisis and conflicts. This included conflicts with the government of U.S.S.R, and the democratic leaders in the West side. Trying to settle peace even trying to allow one side got o another side. In conclusion 1961 was a memorable year for the whole Berlin wall creation and development. Bay of Pigs Invasion “Bay of Pigs invasion” is a remarkable invasion that took place in Cuba. A reason why Billy Joel chose since it took place in 1961 and it was a year that it during the time period that the song talks about. The name Bays of Pig is the name of the bay of Cuba, and well the –invasion- part means the attack that happened. This invasion was known as a HUGE fail. The reason why the U.S. did this invasion was the fact that Castro was trying to build communism slowly. Poor planning and spies from the U.S. force was one of the many reasons why this “invasion” didn't work. Also Cuban exiles which were captured or killed during this attack, returned back to Cuba. Castro knew immediately so he could prepare himself for this aggression. After the presidential election J.F.K immediately took action to the press responses of this failure of attack.

 Adolf Eichmann

Adolf Eichmann was an ex Nazi soldier, that was caught. In 1961 he was caught in Argentina, while he was living as Ricardo Clement outside of the capital. When he was caught he was taken to Israel where a controversy trial took place. It happened between April, 2 to August 14, 1961 which was a long time. The decision took place in December where he was sentenced to death. He was then executed on May 31 in Ramallah prison. In conclusion I think this was part of the song because this man took a lot of time to find, and he was caught successfully since governments from many other countries haven’t been able to find other former Nazi soldiers. Also a pretty other obvious reason that Adolf Eichmann was mentioned in this song was because the year that the most memorable or important event was in the time period that this song focuses on.

 Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan was a very famous folk/rock artist. In 1961 many important things happen to his career that made it go better and better. One of the first events was when his first recording took place. When he finally got a sense of recording he passed on to performing. But there was one performance that changed his life and that was when he took the stage at Gerde’s Folk City Club. At this club Columbia Record Producers were blown away by his performance. Also he met Joan Baez who helped him with music career. Immediately he officially began his career. He started off by recording a duet with Carolyn Hector. Later on he performs at the Carnegie Chapter hall for fifty three people. To end this marvelous year he recorded his album “Bob Dylan”. From there and on he had a successful career, and with all of these memorable events for bob Dylan in 1961 is a good reason for Billy Joel to put this in his song “We Didn't Start the Fire”.

 Ernest Hemingway

For this subject is it a little different. Ernest Hemingway actually died this year (1961). Hemingway killed himself at the age of sixty one, putting a gun barrel around his lips. Some say that he killed himself because he was very depressed and had poor health. Yet he had a good life until he committed suicide. Before he killed himself he had won numerous prizes including Pulitzers and Nobel Prizes. ‘The Old Man at Sea’ was the novel that won the Pulitzer Prize which is a very prestigious award. The Nobel Prize was for his novel “A Farewell to Arms”. Also various movies were made out his novels like “For Whom the Bell Tolls”. As some can already see all his titles seem related someway to war. Well in the era of wars he was known to be the man who narrated the war. In some way this relates to one of Billy Joel lyrics which were said like “world War 2...”Therefore it is close to the themes of the wars that happened in the history.

 Stranger in a Strange Land

The Hugo award winning book Stranger in a Strange Land was first published in 1961. This fictional book written by Robert A. Heinlein is about the following. It all starts with a young kid who was raised by Martians in Mars. When he grew up he was then taken to Earth and he did not know anything about anything. Time after time he began learning about humanity, and something that changed his life love. When he finally learned everything about life out of Mars, he then in love with Earth and began a new life. He found a church and met new friends. In conclusion I think Billy Joel used this historic event probably because as mentioned before the author was known as one of the best Science Fiction book, and also something that wasn't mentioned was the interesting movie that was adapted from this amazing book.

 Bay of Pigs Invasion

“Bay of Pigs invasion” is a remarkable invasion that took place in Cuba.
