FC: The Catcher in teh R | The Catcher In The Rye and Monomyth By Topaz Snyder

The call | The call would be when Holden is kicked out of Pencey Prep.for flunking four out of five classes. Holden has been kicked out of many schools for Flunking all of his classes. "I forgot to tell you about that. They kicked me out. I wasn't supposed to come back after Christmas vacation, on the account of I was flunking four subjects and not applying myself and all" (Salinger 4)This is the call for Holden because he has been kicked out and he has to find a way to get home.

Refusal to call The refusal for him to leave his when he is standing up on the hill of the football field looking down at the people. Also when he goes to see his teacher that's sick, and when he goes back to his dorm to just hang out and think. "It was pretty nice to get back to my room, after i left old Spencer, because everyone was down at the game and the heat was on in our room, for a change" (Salinger 17) When Holden goes back to his room his annoyed by his annoying friend from the room next door.

Supernatural Aid "I'd like to put some sense in that head of yours, boy. I'm trying to help you. I'm trying to help you, if i can" (Salinger 14) Supernatural Aid old Spencer would be Holden's supernatural aid since he told Holden that he needed to get a hold of himself and start trying harder. Because Holden will not make it in real life with the attitude that he has. (Salinger 9-24)

Crossing the first threshold Crossing the first threshold for Holden would be when he decides to leave the school and relax for a while until Wednesday when the letter that the school sent to his parents got to them. "All of a sudden, i decided what I'd do really do, I'd get the hell out of Pencey- right that same night and all" (Salinger 51) After getting into a fight with his roommate Holden finally realizes that he has to leave Pencey Prep.

The Belly of the Whale "It was too late to call up a for a cab or anything. so I walked the whole way to the station" (Salinger 53) The belly of the whale would be the train that takes Holden from the school and into New York city. This is where he meets the mother of a friend he went to school with.

This would be when Holden is wondering around NY trying to find some way to keep himself busy. "The cab i had was a real old one that smelled like someone'd tossed his cookies in it."With noting to do and time to burn Holden must try to keep himself busy until Wednesday. | Road of Trials

Meeting with the Goddess | "Then, i finally woke her up. i mean i couldn't sit there on the desk for the rest of my life, and besides, i was afraid that my parents might barge in on me all of sudden and i wanted to at least say hello to her before they did. so i woke her up." This is the first time that Holden has gone home since he was axed out of Pencey Prep. He wants to see his sister before he runs away and she tries to talk him out of it but he won't stay. Since he believes that his a disappointment to his parents.

Temptation from the real true path | This would be when he is with old Sally and he gets the idea that they should run away together and leave everything behind. "Here's my idea. i know this guy in Greenwich Village that we can borrow his car for a couple of weeks. He used to go the same school as me and he owes me a ten bucks.what we could do is, tomorrow morning we could drive up to Massachusetts and Vermont, and all around there, see." (Salinger 132)

Atonement with the Father | All right. listen to me a minute now...i may not word this as memorably as i'd like to, but ill write i'll write you a letter about it in a day or two. then you can get it all straight. but listen now, anyway. This fall i think you're heading riding for-it's a special kind of fall, a terrible kind.the man falling isn't permitted to feel or hear himself hit bottom. he just keeps falling and falling" (Salinger.187) This where Mr. Antolini tells Holden that he is heading for a break down and he doesn't even realize it and he won't until he reaches rock bottom.

Apotheosis | The apotheosis would be Holden trying to figure out the true meaning off life. "I felt so god damn happy all of a sudden, the way old Phoebe kept going around and around. i was damn near bawling, i felt so damn happy, if you want to know the truth. I don't know why. It was just she looked so damn nice, the way she kept going around and around, in her blue coat and all" (Salinger 212) This is where Holden realizes that life has it's up's and down's and sometimes you have to go with it.

Refusal to reuturn | "I can't wait around till Wednesday anymore so i will probably hitch hike out west this afternoon. Meet me at the museum of art near the west door at quarter past 12 if you can." (Salinger 200) This is where Holden has decided that he is not going home. That he would rather hitch hike away from his family and travel for a while.

Master of two worlds | The master of two worlds for Holden would be when he realizes that he cannot run away from being an adult. That sooner or later he has to grow up. "The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it and not say anything. If they fall, they fall off, but it's not if you say anything to them.
