2: July 8, 2009 Was it the full moon yesterday? Did the stars all line up in the right way? Was it the fact that my sister was sending me good vibes? Was it the goofy ‘torch’ I made by rolling up a piece of white, legal sized paper. Or, was it just in the numbers – July 8, 2009 for 2010 (07 / 08 / 09 / 10)? Whatever it was, it was the day I was lucky enough to be chosen to carry the Olympic Torch. The lead up to this great opportunity is a good news story in itself. Here’s an excerpt from the original e-mail note: ‘As you may know, the BC Public Service has been allocated 10 torchbearer spots in the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay. Three are still to be allocated, and it was decided they should be allocated to three of the top work units on the 2009 Work Environment Survey. I’m pleased to advise you that one of those work units has been identified as the Court Service’s Strategic Information & Business Applications team.’ I am so proud and fortunate to work in the Strategic Information & Business Applications (SIBA) team. It comes with all kinds of rewards and this is one of them. Our great leader Dan asked everyone who was interested to put their name forward. And, SIBA being SIBA decided that a completely random draw of a name from a hat was the best and fairest way to choose someone. I haven’t seen a video or picture of the moment but I do distinctly remember watching Dan pull the name out of the hat and being shocked to hear him say my name. It’s in my calendar as one of the first of many keepsakes of this journey. I can honestly say I am just beginning to realize the immensity of this great honour and responsibility. Man, I hope I don’t drop the thing! Although doing the run in Victoria would be great, I think Port Hardy or Cumberland might be better – less people around to take pictures.
3: July 10, 2009 Oh crap! Just realized I'll have to wear 'real' shoes won't I. But then again, apparently El Nino is back so maybe it will be clear and warm and I could wear my flip flops. :)
