2: Lorraine Hansberry - Lorraine was born May 19, 1930 in Chicago - She studied art at University of Wisconsin and Mexico -After seeing a school performance of " Juno and the Paycock" in 1944 she want to become a writer. - In 1950 she dropped out of college and moved to New York

3: Lorraine Hansberry - She took writting classes at New School for Social Reasearch - Worked at Paul Robeson's "Freedom" a black magazine - During this period she met Langston Hughes - Hughes influenced her greatly.

4: Lorraine Hansberry - In 1953 she married Robert B. Nemiroff. - After marrying she became a waiter and a cashier. When she could she would try to write. - Nemiroff had a hit song. After he had a hit song she quit her job and focused on writing.

5: Lorraine Hansberry -" A Raisin in the Sun" opened on March 11, 1959 at Ethel Barrymore Theater. - 1st drama by a black women to be produced on Broadway. - The film version of " A Raisin in the Sun" came out in in 1961.

6: Lorraine Hansberry - Lorraine divorced in 164 - She completed "The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window" her 2nd play in 1964 - She died at age 34 - She died of cancer on January 12, 1965

7: Lorraine Hansberry - "To be Young, Gifted, and Black" was adapted from her writings, and was produced Off-Broadway in 1969 -She made her 1st draft of "Les Blancs" in 1960 - She didn't finish the her exhusband did - On November 15, 1970 " Les Blancs" was showed at Longacre Theatre, New York City.

9: Langston Hughes - Born on Feburuary 1, 1902 in Joplin Missouri - He lived with his grandmother -His grandmother died while Hughes was in 8th grade - After she died he wrote his first poem and became the class poet. - He began writing in High School.

10: Langston Hughes -He lived in Lincoln, Illinois for a year than moved to Cleveland Ohio. -His step-father and mother moved to Chicago, but Hughes stayed to finish high school in Cleveland -He wrote poems for his high school magazine.

11: Langston Hughes -His father came back into his life at the end of junior year. -Hughes went to Mexico for the summer where his father lived. -Being in Mexico with his father made Hughes become muture. -Back in Cleveland he started to right for the his school magazine "he began writing poetry for distinction."

12: Langston Hughes -His father convinced Hughes to come to Mexico by paying 1 year of college. -On the train ride to Mexico he wrote 'Negro Speaks of Rivers.' -His father wanted him to be an engineer,but Hughes wanted to write poems. -Hughes sent some of his poems to 'Brownies Book' and 'Crisis' magazine and they accpeted them. -His father was impressed so he paid for one year at Columbia University in NYC in 1921.

13: Langston Hughes -He wrote his volume of poetry called "The Big Sea" -It was autobiography and it influnced the Harlem Renaissance greatly. -He won 1st place in the "Opportunity" magazine. -He wrote his 2nd volume of poetry in 1927 and it was called "Fine Clothes to the Jew."

14: Langston Hughes -In 1926 he went back to at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. -Charlotte Osgood Mason encouraged Hughes to write his 1st novel "Not Without Laughter" -In the 1930s he focused on writing plays. -In 1942 he wrote a column in the newspaper "Chicago Defender." -In 1947 "Street Scene" a Broadway musical which gave Hughes enough money to buy his house.

15: Langston Hughes -In 1951 he wrote one of his best volumes of poetry, "Montage of a Dream Deferred." -For 16 years Hughes "wrote more than 20 additional works." - He died on May 22, 1967. - He died after having had an abdominal surgery.

17: April Rain Song Let the rain kiss you Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops Let the rain sing you a lullaby the rain makes still pools on the sidewalk The rain makes running pools in the gutter The rain plays a little sleep song on our roof at night And i love the rain

(line 5) -Imagery: "The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk." (line 4) -Personification: "let the rain sing you a lullaby." (line 3)

19: TPCASTT Attitude: Loving Shifts: The subject changes from line 3 to line 4 and the mood changes from line 6 to line 7. -Line 3 to line 4: Changes from what the rain can do for you to what the rain does. -Line 6 to line 7: Changes from what the rain does to how much he loves the rain. Title: The title is of the poem is describing how the rain is musical. Theme: The poem is about how special and wonderful the rain can be.

(line 2) -Imagery: "And boards torn up," (line 5)

23: TPCASTT -Attitude: Advice -Shifts: The tone changes from line 13 to line 14. It changes from the mother talking about how hard her life has been to giving advice to her son. -Title: The title shows how important mother can be to a son. -Theme: Life is not easy. You are going to have a rough time through life, but you have to keep going no matter how rough life gets.
