1: Anselm Keifer - Born March 8, 1945 in Donaueschingen, Germany - Art career began in 1966 when he dropped out of school to study art - His art initially expressed the German burden of the Nazi legacy - 1970s - myth, religion, history - Studied under many artists, mainly with Joseph Beuy - Neo-expressionism

3: Occupations -1969 - Photograph - Shows Kiefer dressed in military uniform peforming the Nazi salute - Multiple pictures - show same image except in France and Italy - One of most controversial works - Do the pictures express a distrubing desire for the past Nazi regime or does it satirize the dreams of the Nazi empire? - "I have to reenact what they did just a little bit in order to understand the madness."

5: Quaternity - 1973 - Oil and charcoal on burlap - Represents the Holy Trinity - Snake = Satan/evil - Kiefer presents evil or Satan, as a fundamental element in the spiritual matrix - There is eternal balance of good and evil, creation and destruction

7: Margarethe - 1981 - Oil and straw on canvas - Influenced by Paul Celan's poem, Death Fugue + about life for jews during the holocaust, in a concentration camp - Blonde hair of Margarethe made using straw - Shows the devastation and ruin of Germany during WWII - Bottom - destroyed battlefield has blonde hair on it representing one of the reasons for war
