FC: Earthquake in Chile: A Complicated Fracture
1: This article is about the earthquake that occurred in Chile on February 27th, 2010. Scientists said that the underlying plates of the Pacific Ocean floor moved eastward and collided with South America. This collision with South America is what caused the earthquake in Chile. Professor Onno Oncken is the leader of the GFZ, which is a group that has been studying the collision of the Nazca plate since 1994. Scientists are comparing the Nazca plate collision to the Chile plate collision because they are similar. Scientists believe that by learning about the Nazca plate they will gain insight on the Chile plate and learn more about what happened in the pacific ocean the day that the Chilean earthquake occurred. | disaster may occur.
2: This article is important to society because it lets them know what caused the earthquake. It also lets the public gain insight at what is going on in the world. After reading this article i have more knowledge on what happened in Chile as well as what caused it. Many people in society go into a panic when they find out about an earthquake. If scientists find a way to warn people of these disasters then it will be very beneficial for all societies.
5: This article is important to me because it taught me more about plate tectonics. By reading this article i learned what caused the earthquake in Chile. It is also important because it shows that scientists are doing more and more studies to help prevent disasters in the cities. If scientists can figure out how earthquakes happen and when they will happen, then they will be able to warn us before disaster strikes, which is very important to me if I'm ever in a situation where an earthquake or other natural disaster may occur.
