FC: Sumatran Orangutan | Endangered Animal

Of all the species of plants and animals on this earth, the Sumatran orangutan is one of the most endangered.
Found only on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, it is estimated that 6,500 are left in the wild.
The major reason for the decline is the loss of the orangutan’s habitat. The settlers in the area are clearing the land for oil palm plantations and logging. Roads are being created throughout the land. This encroachment is destroying the food and living areas these orangutans need to survive. Protected areas are being established that place restrictions on the amount of land that can be cleared for farming and logging. Another solution is to try to establish a separate ecosystem on another part of the island where the orangutan can call home.
Due to the loss of habitat, the orangutans are going to the forest edge and eating the fruit crops found on the farms and plantations.
They are thought of as pests and killed.
Orangutans are thought of as lovable animals. People around the world want them as pets. However, they will only buy baby orangutans. | Orangutans are thought of as lovable animals. People around the world want them as pets. However, they will only buy baby orangutans.
In order to capture the baby, the mother will be killed and the baby taken away. Since there are so few females and only 3-5 babies are born to a mother, their population is in jeopardy. They are unable to repopulate the species.
Organizations are trying to educate people around the world about the plight of the Sumatran orangutan. With the support of the local governments and settlers, this species will be able to survive. It is imperative that people think about what we are doing to the animals and change our behavior before another species disappears forever.
