BC: Cause and Effect: Westward Expansion | I believe this time period was vital in establishing ourselves as the world leaders we are today. Because without the industrial revolution and gaining all the land in the West. It would have been much more difficult for us to keep up with France and Britain. | For reading!!
FC: Expanding Westward: How we did it.
1: The IDEA of sectionalism meant having a strong allegiance to the certain region you live in. It brought much rivalry between different areas of the United States. And is one of the causes of the Civil War.
2: The IDEA of abolishing slavery ties into the idea of sectionalism. Slavery was big in the Southern states. They needed the slaves to produce cotton and tobacco cheap and efficiently. But the North was against slavery and wanted to fully abolish it.
3: The IDEA of war with either Britain or France was terrifying to the young country. | Yet, facing much cruelty from Britain overseas, America declared war on Britain.
4: Meriwether Lewis discovered many new plant species during their expedition to the Pacific. | Natural
5: Geographic | William Clark mapped the geographical points of the west.
6: Social | The Americans mostly treated the Indians unkindly and unfairly.
7: Social | Most Indians had tried to treat the Americans with respect. But it became difficult withAmerica's greediness.
8: The Election of 1824 | The two main candidates were.. | John Quincy Adams | And... | Andrew Jackson | Jackson received the highest number of popular votes. But since he didn't have more than half of the electoral. The vote went to the House of Representatives. Jackson, with the help of the Speaker of the House won the vote and became President.
9: The Missouri Compromise | The Missouri Compromise declared that Missouri remain a slave state and Maine become a free state. And every state north of the 36 30' N parallel. | This is also another example of sectionalism. The south supported slavery and the north did not.
10: Economy - Factories | Since this was right in the middle of the industrial revolution. Working in factories was a large part of the economy. With all the new technology being built many jobs were available in factories.
11: Economy - Agriculture | Agriculture was a big part of this time period. In the 1820's more than 65% of Americans were farmers. Tobacco and cotton were big-selling crops only grown in America. They could be sold to Europeans at a high price.
12: Amazing Grace | Christian hymn, Amazing Grace, was written by John Newton and published in 1779. This highly recognizable song was very popular in the early 19th Century.
13: Architecture/ Furniture | Much of the architecture and furniture was similar to French and British design. Some things you would find in an American home would be a Sewing rocker or a Piano.
14: The Cotton Gin | The cotton gin was a huge invention for agricultural TECHNOLOGY in the early years of the United States. The modern version of the cotton gin was created by American inventor Eli Whitney in 1793.
15: The Steamboat | Robert Fulton invented the first steamboat in 1807. | This technology improved transportation through waterways.
