4: A TAD OF HISTORY... THE HEAFNERS Our great, great, great grandfather was Deter Hafner, originally from Germany who first settled in Pennsylvania. Moving his family to North Carolina, Deter purchased 300 acres "along both sides of Fisher Creek in Mecklenburg County." Deter, a blacksmith, and his wife, Elizabeth, had 5 sons--one of whom, Nicholas, served during the American Revolution. Deter Hafner's death in either late 1787 or early 1788 was recorded by a clerk as HEVENER. From this lineage came Moses HEAFNER, who married Amanda Huffstetler, and they had 9 children--one of whom was our Grandfather Heafner. Our grandfather, Robert Moses HEAFNER, was born in Crouse (Lincoln County), North Carolina. Our grandmother was Nancy Ethel Hildebrand, born to Robert Vance Hildebrand (2-5-1859) and Nancy Victoria Edwards. They had 13 children: Henry, Augusta, Bennie, Fannie, Gaither, Jesse, McKinley, Nancy Ethel and Leola. Nancy Ethel's dad was a surveyor and found dead lying across a stump in the woods; therefore, making her mom a very young widow. She wanted to learn to play the organ so her mom ordered a music book for $1.00, and she taught herself. Grandmother Heafner became the organist in Hopewell Methodist Church (Sherrill's Ford) at the ripe age of 11, and continued to age 16. Her older brothers were in charge of the family funds, and would only buy her cloth but no pattern when she needed "church clothes". A talented seamstress she became--again self taught. At age 16, she married Robert Moses Heafner, and they moved to East Gastonia, North Carolina. They both worked in the local yarn mills, grandfather Heafner was a well respected supervisor. Eight children were born to Robert and Ethel: Robert Edward "Jockey", John Wesley "Bunch", Eugene "Gene" Harding, Jack Dempsey, Vera Frances, Ruby Ethel, Nancy Sue and Juanita.
5: A TAD OF HISTORY... THE GHANTTS Little is known about the immigration of the Ghantt family to the USA, except that supposedly it was derived from Ghent, Belgium. We were able to locate the grave of William Ransom Ghant in Blackstock, SC, which was dated February 14, 1862 -- August 30, 1936. His wife was named Martha, and she lived to be 65 years old. They were the parents of our PawPaw Ghantt, William Perry. William Perry Ghantt was born in Blackstock, SC on May 31, 1898 and died in Gastonia September 15, 1971. PawPaw had 2 brothers: Jim and Sam; 5 sisters: Belle, Emma, France, Dessie and Della. MawMaw Ghantt was born May 29, 1903 in Madison, NC, daughter of Steven Price and Matilda Elizabeth Riddle. Her dad died when she was quite young, and her mom married H.R. Roof. She had 3 brothers: Jim, Sam and Gordon; 4 sisters: Omia, Myrtle, Cindy and Ruby. For an unknown reason, her brother Sam went by their mom's maiden name of Riddle. She had to go to work in the mill at age 8--had to stand on boxes to reach the machines. PawPaw and his dad were accomplished dairy farmers in Chester, SC-- reputed to have the cleanest dairy farm in upper South Carolina. PawPaw and MawMaw were married on Friday, October 13, 1922. Sometime around 1941 they moved their family to East Gastonia, North Carolina, having to live with PawPaw's brother Sam until he found a job. Then they moved to the house on Propst Street, and after Aunt Helen married Buddy Manns, they moved to the brick house on Lower Dallas Road. Children born were: James Edward Ghantt (9-5-1923--April 2000), Scott William (9-5-1925--May 13, 2000), Harvey Samuel (February 16, 1919--April 10, 1984), Robert Brown (December 5, 1930--August 1, 2000), Perry Eugene (March 29, 1933-- ) and Helen Hope (December 19, 1940-- ). Our dad was named William Scott; however, he changed it to Scott William upon his entry into the Army Air Corps.
