1: Origins of Hip Hop Hip Hop music is the Jamaican style of "toasting". Toasting is when you talk or chant over a rhythm or beat. Toasting started off at dances called "blues dances" which took place in large halls or even in slum yards.
2: MCing | The term MC which was short for "master of ceremonies" usually went along with what we call rapping. Rapping is one of the elements of hip hop. It is the form of rhyming lyrics over instruments. Rapping was once called MCing which was used to support the DJ.
3: DJing is the act of choosing pre-recoreded music for others enjoyment. There are many different techniques that DJ's use to enhance the sound. Phrasing is lining up songs so the transitions are smooth. Beat juggling allows the DJ to manipulate the drums in order to make a composition.
4: Graffiti can be dated back to as far as WWII when someone wrote "Kiloy was here". During the 1950's street gangs used graffiti to get their name out. TAKI 183 made graffiti famous. Vic set a goal for himself to write his name on every subway/bus line he rode on.
5: Break dancing was a style of dance that "grew up" around hip hop music. It stretched the body it its limits. There are many moves in break dancing but each move requires many many hours of training. Between 1970-1973 it made its first appearance in clubs.
