1: Through The Years | I O W A | Mrs. Furleigh's Class 2011-2012
2: In 1922, the company introduced its own line of bottled inks for use with it's fountain pens. | In 1930, during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the company was one of the few to actually make a profit in successive years. | By Daylan and Cole
3: Teamquest was first founded in Iowa. Now Teamquest is a global industry. Teamquest mainly deals with computers. Teamquest people have to know all about technolagy. Teamquest has changed over the years from one room to hundreds.
4: Education By Allyssa and Elizabeth The first school was built in 1830,Lee County,southern tip of Iowa. The first schoolhouse was a one room log cabin . One room school children needed to learn how to read and write. Adults needed enough arithmetic to solve daily problems. the spelling bees were big events in school. The first schoolhouse was in Maquoketa,and was originally a blacksmith shop. The Iowa quarter was a painting done by Grant Wood,it represents Arbor Day. The younger kids were taught by the elder. Back then a group of parents tried paying a teacher to provide basic reading,writing and arithmetic then later the state and local leaders decided to setup public schools. The first schoolhouse in Iowa was built in 1830 in Lee County. Jennings was the first school teacher. The way school has changed from then to now is back then they had some schools communities that were so strict that if they were caught smiling or laughing they were punished . We do not get punished . We now have computers and ipads and we can smile and laugh because teachers like us to be happy. Both of the schools have some very nice teachers.
7: Pumpkins have been grown in Iowa since the time of the first settlers. When farmers used horses for farm work horse breeding was a big industry in Iowa. The first people in Iowa grew beans, pumpkins, squash, and corn. Iowa's farmers get great yield because of Iowa's rich black soil. Livestock, rich soil, and crops is agriculture in Iowa. Small farms became big during the Vietnam War. Today Iowa is the leading state in corn and beans. Fertilizing helps us get better yield. Today modern technology helps farmers get a lot better yield unlike back then in the time when they used horses. | By Ryan and Joel
8: Iowa was named after the Ioway Indians. The name Ioway means sleepy ones. They grow squash,beans and corn. They were good hunters and trappers. When the Ioway traded with the French they no longer depended on the environment. They traded for metal traps, pots and pans,and weapons. The Ioway were peaceful to missionaries. The Ioway followed the buffalo and elk and they moved when war and disease were close. They lived in the southwestern part of Iowa. One thing that has changed is how they hunt now their are high powered weapons.Now they can build a home and new their are machines that can help them with their crops.Another change is that not many Ioway Indians left in Iowa.

10: Some animals are big and small. There are many animals in Iowa. Some animals are aquatic. | Largemouth bass live in Iowa so do many other different fish. | Turtles live Iowa today. Turtles are semi- aquatic. | The environment get polluted by cars, garbage, smoke from buildings where they make products. Way more pollution is made now than back 150 years ago. | Some places such as prairies were destroyed to make buildings. | Iowa is one of the most naturally changed places in the world. Millions of years ago Iowa had dinosaurs and other animals, but now Iowa doesn't have any dinosaurs. | Iowa is the state that grows the most corn in the country. | The Geode and Wild Rose are Iowa's state rock and flower. | Iowa is the 26th state in the U.S.A. | By Davis and Austin
12: GOVERNMENT | IOWA'S OLD CAPITAL WAS IOWA CITY. | IOWA CAPITAL IS DES MOINES. | NATIVE IOWANS STARTED COUNCILING. | DES MOINES IN THE CAPITAL OF IOWA THE LEADERS OF THE STATE WORK THERE. | THE STATE GOVERNTMENT HAS THREE PARTS,CALLED BRANCHES. THE PARTS ARE THE EXECUTIVE, LEGISLATIVE,AND JUDICIAL BRANCHES. | THE LEGISLATIVE BRANCH MAKES LAWS FOR THE STATE. THE IOWA LEGISLATURE IS CALLED THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY. IT HAS TWO PARTS, THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. THE TWO PARTS WORK TOGETHER TO MAKE LAWS. | IN THE 1800S THE GOVERNER WAS APPOINTED BY THE GOVERNOR.NOW THE GOVENOR IS ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE. | By Jaedyn and Maddie
13: At first the settlers thought the iowa territory should be divided in to two areas one area was for slavory and one was aganst slavory | THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH CARRIES OUT THE STATE LAWS. THE GOVERNOR IS THE HEAD OF THIS BRANCH. | JUDGES AND COURTS MAKE UP THE JUDICIAL BRANCH. JUDGES AND COURTS MAY DECIDE WHETHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEENACCUSED OF COMMITTING CRIMES ARE GUILTY. | THE STATE OF IOWA IS MADE UP OF NINETY NINE COUNTIES. MOST COUNTIES ARE RUN BY THREE PEOPLE THAT ARE ELECTED CITIES HAVE A MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL TO LEAD THEM.

15: Iowa has been and continues to be home to many famous people. Actors, soldiers, politicians, athletes, and many more. Communities have changed since the early Ioway and other natives settled the "Land Between Two Rivers". Many communities hold annual festivals to celebrate occasions such as the fall harvest. Pumpkins have been grown and enjoyed in Iowa since the first settlers.
16: Iowa's first school buses were horse drawn wagons or sleds. Walking by foot and water was the earliest transportation. Stagecoaches were used in Iowa for the need of mail delivery. In 1849-1851 people authorized nearly 600 miles of plank railway in the state. In 1930-1940 roads were improved and buses were invented. The transportation included trains,cars,and boats. The only aluminum bridge is in Urbandale.Some of the roads were made of brick in1812.In the late 1860's the horse-drawn carriages was the main transportation. A major transportation of Iowa was the River Boat. Cars back then went 15 MPH now they go 200 MPH. Now we use airplanes. | By Alex D. and Alex A.

From 1934 until is death, Wood taught at the University of Iowa. | John Wayne He was a hero of many western films and war dramas, was born in Winterset, Iowa. He aced in more than 150 films and won an Academy Award for his performance in the 1969 movie True Gritt | Famous Iowans
19: Mamie Eisenhower She was born in Boone, Iowa. She got married to Dwight D. Eisenhower, who led the Allied D-Day invasion in World War II.When Eisenhower was elected president in 1952, Mamie became first lady. | Donna Reed She was born in Denison,Iowa.She appeared in the movie It's Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart in 1946. In 1953 she won an Academy Award for her roll in From Here To Eternity.She starred in the Donna Reed show,a t.v. situation comedy,from 1958 to 1966. | By Olivia, Kaylee, and Ashley
20: Places To Visit By: Mallory and Nikki Living History Farms, Urbandale is a good place to visit because you get to see it was like in the 1750's-1900's. It gives you good information. You can also go to the Des Moines Capital Building and you can see the way our government works. There is beautiful marble and wood carvings inside the building. Lost Island Water Park, Waterloo is so fun! All the water rides are exciting! The water park is a nice place for a family vacation there is even is mini golf! Near Marquette is Effigy Mounds. It is a hike through the woods, Indian information, and remarkable views of the Mighty Mississippi! 14 miles of fun, but you can stop at any point. Adventureland, Des Moines is a really fun amusement park. You can ride rides, get snacks, and go to the Adventure Bay Water Park! This place is a great place to hang out with your friends and family. Blank Park Zoo is a place that you can see animals. There are different animals from different countries. You can learn information of these animals. Your family would enjoy the trip. It is so cool to look at the all the different kinds of animals. Those are some fun places to visit in Iowa! Hope you get the chance to visit some of these places!
