FC: MiChelaNgeLo :A Sculptor and Painter Like No Other By: Emily Elmore
Dedicated To My Little Brother Robbie. Date Created 3-29-10
Michelangelo is my name; sculpting and painting is my game. I live in a busy city in Italy named Florence. I was born a small town boy in a city named Caprese. One day I was leaving the Catholic Church with my father when a man approached us. “'My name is Ronaldo,'" he told me.“'I talked to your father a few days ago. He said you were a good artist.'” I grinned from ear to ear thinking I was making my father proud. The man, Ronaldo, proceed, “'I would like to offer you a chance to use those artistic skills of yours and come join me at the School of Sculpting.'” At first I was unsure what to say to this man. I glanced at my father he gave me a look telling me to go with my heart. “'I would like to join you at the School of Sculpting,'” I said. Ronaldo replied, “'Great! You can start coming tomorrow.'”

The next day I met up with Ronaldo. He showed me through the school and told me where my classes would be. “'Here is your first class. Your teacher will be Mr. Santoro.'” I took a deep breath and walked through the door. I was surprised that he had no students. “'Ah,'” he said, “'Finally a student for my class.'” I took a seat in the chair and he began to teach me. I went to school there for 12 years and accomplished many things. I became a skilled painter, sculptor, poet, and architect. I finally graduated at age 18.
I started on my first sculpture a year after I graduated. I was inspired by my faith and the church. My patron was Lorenzo De’ Medici. He paid for a lot of the supplies that I needed and helped me out a lot when I needed money. I finally finished my first sculpture at age 20. It was called the Risen Christ and after all my hard work it was still a failure because of a fault in the marble I was using. Lorenzo came to see the finished piece the day after it was done. “'Lorenzo,'” I cried, “'How could I not have seen the fault in this marble. Now my route to becoming a great artist has hit a road bump.'!” Lorenzo looked at me a sparkle in his eye and he replied, 'Don't worry Michelangelo. You have the chance to do many other pieces of art. You have your whole life a head of you. Don't worry.'”

Since that day I have been better at looking over all my work and taking pride in what I have done. I liked to make my sculptures and paintings very realistic and I did not like it when people criticized my creations. I finished many pieces of art in my life time. The sculpture that made me famous at the age of 24 was called “'Pieta'”. This sculpture showed Madonna and Jesus lying across her lap.

 The Statue of David
One of my most prized pieces was my statues of David. He had a sling shot over his back and a rock in his hand. It took me 3 years to finish David. He is 17 feet tall. This statue now lives in the Academia Gallery, in Florence.
I kept painting too. I painted a picture called Doni Tondo. This is a painting of the Holy Family, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. Then when I was 30, Pope Julius the II requested that I paint the Sistine Chapel. I was honored and took the job. I painted the ceiling on my back and painted the whole chapel by hand. One priest criticized my work. Saying he didn't approve of how I was painting it. He is in my painting in a special place close to the floor. I finished the Sistine Chapel in four years.

 The sculpture of Moses
After that I sculpted Moses sitting in a chair. I gave him horns on his head to show him taking in the wisdom from the heavens. This took me 2 years to sculpt. I was asked by Pope Julius II if I would make this statue for his tomb. Of course I agreed, but the sculpture was never on the tomb of Pope Julius II. Instead it now resides in a minor church in Rome. It was put there after the Pope died.
I lived to be almost 90. Most of my work was famous by then. I died on February 18th, 1564. After a long run in the world as an amazing artist, I could finally rest with the Lord in heaven.

Today I have been immortalized as a character in the hit series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I am the orange one, Michelangelo.
