FC: Nellie McClung By: Wynne

I chose to write about Nellie McClung because thanks to her women are now persons. | Nellie McClung was born on October 20 , 1873 close to Chatsworth Ontario. Nellie was the youngest of six children. Her mom’s name was Letitia McCurdy and her dad’s name was John Mooney. They moved to Manitoba when she was seven years old. Her family lived on a farm and her chore was to keep cattle from going into unfenced fields. She began school when she was ten years old.

In July of 1889 Nellie passed her exams so she could train to be a teacher. At 16 years of age Nellie became a teacher for eight grades. During the winters of 1895-1896 she taught at her own school in Northfield.

In1896 Nellie married Robert Wesly McClung. Nellie and Robert had five kids. In 1908 she published the first of sixteen books. Her books were usually about life and times on the prairies. The family moved to Alberta in 1915.

Nellie became a public speaker and politician. She was part of the famous five. As a public speaker she gave speeches to young people clubs, literary clubs, social service groups and many more.

We will always remember how Nellie fought for women to be considered persons and gave women the right to vote.

Interview Questions | 1. What is your greatest fear? I think her greatest fear would be not being able to make it so women were considered as persons because they would not have all the rights men had.

 2. If you could change something about the World what would it be? I think Nellie would say “I would try to make the World a homey and kind place were everyone was treated equally because then there would not be poverty or some people being overworked.

I chose Nellie McClung because she didn’t give up and kept fighting until she struck success. The characteristics that make her a hero is she is brave, kind, tries hard, and is caring and responsible. I think she could be a hero for anyone because Nellie McClung never gave up until she succeeded and everyone should be happy she did.
