1 | Where I’m From I’m from the Sung and Ahn family I’m from the snowy hills of South Korea I’m from the roaring city of Seoul I’m from the suburb Duluth I’m from a family where Korean traditions are important I’m from a family whose concern sometimes goes overboard I’m from a family where relatives have important positions in their careers I’m from a family where there are high expectations of me z
2 | I’m from a place where there’s peace and quiet I’m from a place where from morning till night I study I’m from a place where a second chance is rarely given I’m from a place where a high rank is like the necessity of food and water
3 | I’m from a life where staying up and studying is life I’m from a life where chances of going to a party is like chances of buying a mansion I’m from a life where math was the first thing learned I’m from a life where there is much stress and strain I’m from rice and kimchi every day I’m from ramyun being a simple thing to obtain I’m from relatives in Korea sending necessary items to America I’m from life and love
My Mother’s Kitchen My aunt walks into my mother’s kitchen And cries out in alarm “Why’s there a dead leaf on your counter?” My mother, startled replies “A dead leaf? Where?” While running over to where my aunt is standing | 4
5 | “There!” Pointing to the top of the oven Where indeed there was a single dead leaf Whose color was changing from its sweet green To a repulsive brown As it quivered, trying to fall down to the floor Snatching up a broom, My mother swept it out of the kitchen Into the forlorn grey backyard
6 | Mother to Daughter Life isn’t an elevator Smooth and flowing and fast Like one in Taipei 101 Life isn’t flower Sweet, smooth and soft Like a rose coming to bloom Life isn’t a necklace Beautiful, shining, and special Like a simple diamond necklace
7 | But life is trouble that will try to bring you down Life is harsh and hands you insults Life is hard and many obstacles will come But life is ugly, and will make you ugly Stand out for who you are And never give up
8 | For if you don’t give up Nothing can make you ugly And nothing can stop you from following and accomplishing your dreams
Ode to GSMST The sleepless nights Where students are kept from bed The yellow glow of the startling lights Bring parents up to check To see if their child Stayed up all night To do homework And be riled By the ridiculous sight Of seven to eight different kinds of homework | 9
Oh, Dear Lord The endless nights Of homework are not adored For the simple sight Of rushing through work Scares many students Conscientious about their grades As overachieving is part of their lore And to many students Dropping grades are like sharp blades | 10
But of it all We have some fun Although the classes are small We get much done Boisterous laughter Fills the room As people finish Many things after Studying is resume And the laughter is diminished | 11
Guests | 12 | The music is a joy For people have forever enjoyed How the sweet music is deployed Into a beautiful musical void The love and life of the sweetness The musical abilities And the attributes of music All come from the simple musical completeness The student’s musical capabilities And the complete love of music
Oh Dear Lord Our pain is deep But we still can be restored By falling asleep Peacefully and happily Having nothing to worry about About unfinished homework Or upcoming test that students cannot meet fearlessly Having doubts About their performance in their school work | 13
14 | Reading - Language Arts Reading comes every night As does staying up late till the early light Language arts assignments of every sort Sometimes cuts our time short But reading comes up to be our guide
15 | O Captain My Captain Walt Whitman O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done; The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won; The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting, While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring: But O heart! heart! heart! O the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead.
16 | O captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells; Rise up-for you the flag is flung-for you the bugle trills; For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths-for you the shores a-crowding; For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning; Here Captain! dear father! This arm beneath your head; It is some dream that on the deck, You’ve fallen cold and dead.
My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still; My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse or will; The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done; From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in without object won; Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells! But I, with mournful tread, Walk the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead. | 17
Guests | 18 | O Captain My Captain by Walt Whitman is a very important poem from the time of the Civil War. This poem relates to the time when President Lincoln the leader of the country and the country came out of the civil war. However, the president is shot and this is simply shown in this poem. There is much symbolism and the rhyme scheme is that changes for each stanza.
20 | Without You Hinder I just wanna be alone tonight I just wanna take a little breather Cause lately all we do is fight And every time it cuts me deeper Cause something’s changed You’ve been acting so strange And its taking its toll on me Its safe to say that I’m ready to let you leave
21 | Without you, I live it up a little more everyday Without you, I’m seein myself so differently I didn’t wanna believe it then But it all worked out in the end When I watched you walk away Well I never thought id say I’m fine Without you Called you up cause’ it’s been long enough And you said that you were so much better We have done a lot of growing up We were never meant to be together
22 | Cause something changed, you were acting so strange And it’s taken its toll on me It’s safe to say that I’m ready to let you leave Without you, I live it up a little more everyday Without you, I’m seein myself so differently I didn’t wanna believe it then But it all worked out in the end When I watched you walk away Well I never thought id say I’m fine Without you
23 | Cause something changed, you were acting so strange And it’s taken its toll on me It’s safe to say that I’m ready to let you leave Without you, I live it up a little more everyday Without you, I’m seein myself so differently I didn’t wanna believe it then But it all worked out in the end When I watched you walk away Well I never thought id say I’m fine,
24 | Without you Without you Without you Without you I just wanna be alone tonight, I just wanna take a little breather.
25 | Without you by Hinder is a song about how a boy and his girlfriend could not get along together so when they separated, they finally saw how they were better off without each other and how they see each other differently. There are different parts of the poem that have rhyme and each part has its own repetition. However, all in all, this song is a free-verse song.
