6: Do YOU have what it takes? | Since the influence is private and usually behind the scenes, US First Ladies do not get the credit they deserve. To be President of the United States you must be a natural born citizen, at least 35 years of age, and a resident for at least 14 years. In contrast, there are no official requirements for First Lady. | She has influence, but no legal authority. The job requires that the First Lady be on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Everything she does as her role of President's wife will be criticized, sometimes praised. This includes being in charge of all social and ceremonial events and organizing and attending official ceremonies and functions of state either along with, or in place of, the President. Also, over the course of the 20th Century it had became increasingly common for first ladies to select specific causes to promote, such as Michelle Obama's fight towards childhood obesity. | Acting like a first lady does not include being rude and acting immature. She must be on her best behavior and set an example and represent the idea of a true "American Lady." You will never see Michelle Obama screaming at her kids in public or sleeping in until noon. I am determined to work with folks across this country to change the way a generation of kids thinks about food and nutrition." - First Lady Michelle Obama After calling the issue "one of the most serious threats of the future," Michelle noted that in the past three decades childhood obesity rates have more than tripled. "We have everything we need, right now, to help our kids lead healthy lives ... so let's move to solve it." She is absolutely right. After urging her kids to eat healthier and exercise, Michelle started the campaign to fight childhood obesity. It has become a big problem in our word today and someone needed to do something about it. | Her reason? "It wasn't long ago that I was a working mom, struggling to balance meetings and deadlines with soccer and ballet," she said. "And there were some nights when everybody was tired and hungry, and we just went to the drive-throughs because it was quick and cheap, or went with one of the less healthy microwave options, because it was easy. And one day, my pediatrician pulled me aside and told me, ‘You might want to think about doing things a little bit differently.' That was a moment of truth for me. It was a wakeup call that I was the one in charge, even if it didn't always feel that way." | Michelle explains that when she was in school things were way different.
