1: One night on March 25, 1931 nine black young men were riding a frieght train in Scottsboro, Alabama.

4: A fight broke out and the black men threw the white young men off the train. The white young men filed a complaint with the Scottsboro, Alabama sheriff.

5: . | The white boys stated at the police station "These Niggers assaulted us." The deputy then rounded up every black person on the train.

6: He eventually found the nine black boys (Ozie Powell, Clarence Norris, Charlie Weems, Olen Montgomery, Willie Robertson, Haywood Patterson, Eugene Williams, Andy Wright and Roy Wright) on the train. | The police also discovered two young women who were white. Victoria Price, 19 and Ruby Bates, 17.

7: The young boys were tried, convicted, and sentenced to death for allegedly raping the two young white women. the one black boy was sentenced to life in prison because he was only 13.

8: He eventually found the nine black boys (Ozie Powell, Clarence Norris, Charlie Weems, Olen Montgomery, Willie Robertson, Haywood Patterson, Eugene Williams, Andy Wright and Roy Wright) on the train.

10: The young ladies were afraid of being arrested so Price and Bates falsely claimed that the nine black men had sexually assaulted them. Three days after the trial started and 15 days after the arrest, the jurors found all the young black boys guilty.

12: The two young ladies were even tested for sexual abuse or forceful entry ant the test results came back negative. However this did not help the case because the boys were still sentenced.

13: Once they were wrongly convicted the (ild) International Labor Defense rushed to the boys aid. They appealed the conviction and death sentence to the U.S Supreme Court.

Alabama. | They ruled that the nine boys had not been given adequate legal counsel and the trial took place in a hostile atmosphere. The 14th amendment was violated back in Alabama, so the Supreme Court called for a second trial.
