FC: The "Fit" that Changed Everything
On a bright sunny summer morning, my mom had asked me and my little sister Lucy what she wanted for breakfast. Lucy wanted chocolate chip pancakes. My mom, Kayla, said,”Chocolate chip pancakes it is!” “No!” I shouted, “I want waffles!!” | I started kicking and screaming anything that got in my way. These fits were common all the time in my family, starting with Lucy and I.
My mom had tried to calm me down and said, “I will make waffles just for you, my little professor!” I started to calm down and was all better, until the next little thing. Lucy was playing with my favorite blocks and I wanted a turn with them. Lucy is stubborn and would not let me have a turn. I hit her and kicked her and screamed on the top of my lungs,”Give me my blocks!”
Mom had come into the playroom and calmed me down by giving me my favorite stuffed animal that had this certain texture that I loved. She also brought my favorite bottles that I loved to line up every day.(1) My mom had asked,”What has gotten into you two lately? All you do is scream and kick.” | "Problems Teens With Asperger Syndrome Often Face." Summer Camps and Academic Programs for Kids with Asperger's Syndrome. N.p., n.d. Web. 23 Mar. 2012.
" | The next day was the same all over again except it was Lucy’s turn to have fits. I had her favorite princess puzzle that she loved to put together. She said,”Peter, it is my turn with the puzzle. Give it to me now!” I responded,”No, I will not give it to you. You did not give me my blocks yesterday!” “Ah!” She screamed. “I have had enough of you!” She grabbed her puzzle and hit me a few times.
Mom had come into the room again. “That is it. I am calling a action doctor to see what is wrong with the two of you.” She did too. We had an appointment the next day.
“Hello! My name is Doctor Tom. I will be your action doctor I like to call it for the next couple weeks.” “What are your names?”
Lucy answered first,”I’m Lucy.” “I’m Peter, I am the oldest!”
“Nice to meet you two! So what are you seeing differently that you have never seen before Kayla?”
“They have fits all the time, over anything at all. The other day it was toys or what I was making for breakfast. It really can be anything with them.” Said mom (2) | "What is autism spectrum disorder?" Illawarra Mercury [Illawarra, Australia] 5 May 2009: 26. Infotrac Newsstand. Web. 26 Mar. 2012.
“Oh I see. Is there a way to calm them down or how do you get them to stop screaming?”
“One thing I do with Peter, he likes to stack things or put them in order in a line or some sort. I give him bottles or boxes or something to calm him down. He does this regularly. Another thing I do is he likes certain textures. He has this teddy bear that he rubs his fingers on to feel the material. That seems to keep him calm. For Lucy I give her puzzles that she loves to put them together. She always loves to read books and she’s only three. So I just give her books and she reads them.” (3) | "Asperger's can mean a productive life; DNA Interview." DNA [Daily News & Analysis] 2 Mar. 2010. Infotrac Newsstand. Web. 26 Mar. 2012.
“Oh! I have been taking notes and I think I may know what the problem is here.” “Oh thank goodness, I hope so! So what’s your diagnosis?”
“I think both your kids have the syndrome Asperger's. It’s most common is three to five year olds. There is no cure for it, but there are ways to improve this and I might be able to help you find them.” (2) | "Asperger's can mean a productive life; DNA Interview." 14: “Oh my. What is Asperger’s anyways?” Doctor Tom answered,” Asperger’s is a high- functioning autism. It also means that you have obsessions and can have fits as you call it sometimes.” (1)

“One thing we can do is have them go to a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy where they can help with the certain relationships they are having trouble with. Also they help them deal with the fits they have and the different situations they might have to be in. Another thing is we can get them a special teacher to just focus on their needs and their special abilities that some other kids do not have.” Said Doctor Tom (4) | "The Complete Low Down to Treatments and Therapies." Dedicated To Helping Parents Of Children with Aspergers. N.p., n.d. Web. 5 Apr. 2012.
“Well that is a sigh of relief. Where can I get them a therapist and a special teacher?”
“I can certainly help with that! You can also go on the official website for Asperger’s, they will answer your questions there and they have advice for new families to this syndrome. “ (3) | "Asperger Syndrome ." 19: “Thank you for all your help Doctor Tom, we really appreciate it. But one last quick question!”
“What is it Kayla?” the doctor asked. Kayla answered,” At what age should I start looking for a teacher for them? Peter is only five and Lucy is three. So when is a good time?”
Doctor Tom stated,” A good time would be when they go right into kindergarten so around age six. I would let them go to kindergarten first to see how they do. (2) Not all children with this syndrome have to have a special teacher of their own. So what I would do is let them go to schooling first then figure out what to do from there. Definitely have a therapist, they work the best.” | "The Complete Low Down to Treatments and Therapies." Dedicated To Helping Parents Of Children with Aspergers. N.p., n.d. Web. 5 Apr. 2012.
“Thanks so much! You have helped my family in only one appointment. Better get going, thanks for your time again Doctor Tom.” Said Kayla | Thanks so much!!
“No problem at all! Peter and Lucy will you like a pop?” “Yes, please” They both said in unison.
“Here you go! Have a great day and you can always contact me if you need me.” Said Doctor Tom. Thanks! Have a great day as well. Better get going. Come on Peter and Lucy dinner is waiting on us.” Said Kayla excitedly.
