BC: GO TEAM! | 2009
FC: Sports: Then and Now | By: Katherine Klein
 THEN: 1700s
it began in 1705 and was adopted from England. | The 1700s: | Cricket- | Golf | Men golfed in groups in fashionable outfits to socialize; official rules made later. | Horse Racing | Men bred and traded horses for the races. Many people showed up for the races and they were very big events in the cities that held them.
Sports and other events were ways to get away from work. The 1700s was a hard time for colonial America, and sports were great escapes and fun. | Men spent a lot of time and money to ensure that their team or horse won. They had a lot riding on the outcome of sports. | Athletes in the Past | ONLY men participated in organized sports. Mainly young, fashionable men.
Athletes' pay and treatment | athletes did not receive any income or money. sports were unorganized and for entertainment only. the only way to earn money through sports was betting and hoping that you won. because sports weren't organized, sports were often violent and ended in fights.
 NOW: 2000s
Top Ten Sports in America 1. Football 2. Baseball 3. Basketball 4. Soccer 5. Hockey 6. Golf 7. Nascar 8. Tennis 9. Mixed Martial Arts 10. Boxing
AMERICAN ATHLETES | Men AND women participate in sports today. | There are thousands of student athletes as well. | Athletes are well- trained and cared for. Sports are much more serious and competitive.
Pay for Athletes | Professional athletes get paid anywhere between $80,000 a year to MILLIONS of dollars. They rely on their fans and get paid to play their sport in front of eager...and well paying....fans.
Let's Compare | Athletes- | Athletes in the past were only men and were generally rich. Sports were unorganized and violent. Athletics today are offered to everyone. Regardless of race or religion, you can participate in a sport of your choosing. Women are also members of sporting teams. Athletes have come a long way since the 18th century.
Let's Compare | Pay- | Sports- | There are tons of sports in the America today. We have hundreds of organized sports, but also many unorganized and non-competitive sports. | Athletes today get paid tons of money, but back in the 1700s, the weren't competitive or in leagues, so they did not get paid. They only won money in betting.
-Sports have evolved dramatically since the 18th century. -They have spread to many other countries, and expanded into a world-wide sports community. - Sports have become a necessary part of society, not only in America, but in the world. | Conclusion
