Right behind the snoozing kitty is his warm, white milk. It is deep and thick and flowy and as smooth as silk. A teeny, tiny mouse puts his right paw in and decides he's feeling up for a nice long swim.
A little while later when the cat wakes up to drink, the mouse dashes home with a splash, plonk, plink! When the kitty turns around toward his dish with a yawn, he sees only a milky mess, for the mouse has gone!
Poor kitty is still hungry, and since his milk has spilled, he decides, "I'll have some cheese until my belly is filled!" So while the mouse is in his bathtub cleaning the milk from his fur, the hungry kitty cat steals some cheese with a purr.
So on it went day after day this sneaking around the house, the mouse swimming in the kitty's milk, and the cat stealing cheese from the mouse.
The cat and the mouse, upon returning from their very sneaky days, met each other in the hall to both of their dismay. The cat looked down at the mouse, with his snorkel and his fins, and hissed, "you bad, bad neighbor- you've been in my milk again!"
The mouse gazed up at the cat, in turn, and said, "what of your paw? Don't think that you can hide my cheese; I already saw!"
A butterfly fluttered down to the pair at the noise of the silly fight. She hovered at their noses and listened to their plight!
When the cat and mouse stormed back to their homes to sit and grumble and pout, the butterfly was busy fluttering about.
She asked the cat, "are you mad because he spilled your food? You hate the stuff- you ate the stuff so as not to seem rude!"
To the mouse, she mumbled, "sure, he ate your favorite dish, but you're the one who splashed around in his drink like a fish!"
The cat and the mouse were puzzled, for the butterfly was right; but still they hid away all day, continuing their fight.
To themselves they simply chuckled as they thought, "a cat and mouse can't get along; or has the bug forgot?"
Not even a week later when the kitty's tummy churned, he tiptoed to the mouse's hole- no lesson had been learned!
But when the cat looked down towards the cheese in his paw, It was only the angry mouse that he saw. When the mouse saw the cat, he blushed a bright, bright red. "I've been swimming in your milk again," The guilty rodent said.
Then, before the two started fighting then and there, the butterfly appeared, right out of thin air! She sang, "If you two want these things that don't belong to you, you will have to learn to share, like friends and families do!"
"Cat, why don't you let mouse swim? Mouse, you share your meal! That way if either of you want milk or cheese, you won't sneak around and steal!"
This was such a great idea that the cat and mouse weren't sad. They really had a lot in common, for they'd both been very bad. So once they'd done some talking, they knew a cat and mouse could spare some milk and share some cheese and live together in a house.
The mouse started right away, squeaking, "would you like some cheese?" The cat offered a smile and said, "Yes please, yes please!" "'Eat it a little more,' he said. 'Eat it well'" (Hemingway 44). The cat showed appreciation with the swinging of his tail. "He picked up a piece and put it in his mouth and chewed it slowly" (Hemingway 58).
The Butterfly, seeing that her job was done, flew contentedly away to find another one.
"He was bright in the sun and his head and back were dark purple and in the sun the stripes on his sides showed wide and a light lavender"(Hemingway 62).
We all have our own butterflies to help us on our way. They are with us everywhere, on every single day.
If you never doubt yourself and never doubt your butterfly, You'll find, no matter where you go, that there's a friend nearby.
