FC: The Life of Mark Twain
1: Born in Florida, Missouri on November 30. In 1839, moved to Hannibal, Missouri where his father opened a general store. In 1843, they moved into the house known as Mark’s Boyhood Home, but in 1846, poverty forced the family to move out of his Boyhood Home and move in with Dr. Grants family above the Drug Store.
2: A few years after he moved into Dr. Grants house in 1846, Mark made his first appearance on stage in San Francisco, in 1865. It was a lecture on Hawaii, also known as the Sandwich Islands, he was very nervous, so he made a poster that read, “Doors open at 7 , the trouble will begin at 8.” That was the beginning of the performer known as Mark Twain.
3: When Mark Twain was 34, he got married to Olivia Langdon Clemems, who was the daughter of a New York coal magnate which of who were very wealthy. But winning Livy (Olivia’s nickname) over meant than a status change, but she would also become his partner, editor and fellow traveler over the next 35 years.
4: When Mark Twain reached the end of his life, he became very lonely, so he took in a bunch of grand children. When he finally died on April 21, 1910, newspapers declared, “The whole world is mourning.” That was the end of a proud possession of the American nation.
