BC: This scrapbook is dedicated to my beloved Nanny and Tea Cake. You will always be in my heart.

FC: Janie's Journal: My Many Influences

1: Pheoby Watson | Pheoby is really my only friend in Eatonville. She is the only one who doesn't gossip about me and she is there for me in my time of need. It is really nice to have someone like her in my life. When I returned to Eatonville without Tea Cake, she asked to hear what actually happened and I told her. I feel very comfortable telling Pheoby things and I think she is a very genuine person.

2: Nanny, my amazing grandmother, meant so much to my life when she was still alive. She was a slave when she was a young girl and she did her best to instill the mentality of her time in me. She did as well as she could to make sure that I lived a happy and prosperous life. We didn't see eye to eye about everything, but I know she was only looking out for my best interest. She decided that she would have me marry Logan Killicks which was not what I wanted. Looking back I realize that it was only that she was trying to have me lead a good life. | Nanny

3: Logan Killicks | My first husband was Logan Killicks. Although I was not very interested in him at all, I was forced to marry him. For a good amount of time I decided that I would stay with him to please my grandmother, but I couldn't do it any longer. It was terribly boring being married to Logan and all I wanted was to be with someone who loved me and cared for me. He did properly take care of me in the beginning of our relationship, but the way he treated me at the end of our marriage made me very content towards leaving him.

4: Jody Starks | Jody Starks was my first true love. Because of him, I decided to leave Logan and run away. I believe that I did not make a mistake, but Jody Starks was in no way the man that I thought he was. Jody loved me, but was so conceited and worried that I would have some sort of power, that he abused me and treated me like a second class citizen. I truly believe that deep down, Jody Starks was an extremely insecure man and, although he was able to run a town, he was not as amazing as he was made out to be. He died in vain and I am glad that I was able to move on to an even better, more amazing person.

5: Tea Cake | Tea Cake was my last husband and is truly the only man for me. Although we had are times of disagreement, he showed his love for me almost always and made me a happy person. Before I fell in love with him, I was with Jody Starks and I had finally learned how amazing it was to be independent. Tea Cake allowed me to build on my independence and took me to De Muck, a place where I could be myself and experience a variety of people and things. I shared so many fun experiences with him like being with him under the pear tree. (continued...)

6: Tea Cake (...continued) | Thanks to Tea Cake, I was really able to find out who I am as a person. I had to kill Tea Cake and that was really hard for me to do. He meant everything to me and I could not stand by and watch him suffer. He was bitten by a dog and became rabid. This has been the hardest thing for me to swallow in my life. I killed the person that I loved the most. I think about him everyday and I wonder if I did the right thing by him. I will always think about him and his spirit will always be in my heart.
