30: July 11, 2010 Dear Viviana, I am writing this letter to you on your first birthday. Tears come to my eyes as I am overwhelmed by how deep my love for you has grown and how bittersweet it is to have seen your first year pass. As I reflect, I remember the moment I first laid my eyes on you and was surprised how I did not recognize you. Now, when I look at pictures of my newborn Vivi, I recognize her and smile or laugh at the little girls I see waiting to bloom in that fresh, new baby. I was very afraid of what motherhood would mean and how I would do and you taught me that it means a lot of good things and that the hard parts are only hard, but never too much because of how deep my love is for you. We took some time to learn each other's rhythms and we did a really goo job! We keep fine tuning it as you develop and develop and develop some more. I loved when you slept on my chest when you were a new born. I loved when your eyes brightened and you started connecting with me and the world around you. I loved watching you find your hands and learn how to use them. I loved how you began to work your body, pushing yourself up like a cobra, rolling, rocking, crawling, pulling yourself up, standing, cruising, and walking. My heart melted when your words started to make sense, especially since "Mama!" was the clearest thing you said. We are just starting to see you sign and it is darling.
31: In your special personality, you gave us gifts. One of your gifts was your sleep. You slept and fed frequently as a newborn, but between six and eight weeks we started to see you regulate and you went down for bed so calmly, rarely fussing. You would wake for a few night time feedings, but by eight months you only occasionally needed an early morning bottle. By your first year, you were sleeping from about 8:00 PM to 7:00 AM and this was a gift to your parents. Another gift you gave us was your healthy appetite and love of healthy food! You have been such a good eater and you eat all the healthy food we give you. We loved watching you try your new foods at five to seven months and by eight or nine months, you were chomping away on a lot of foods with your early teeth. Now you are eating nearly everything we do....with your hands! Your greatest gift to me is your joy and the light that comes through your eyes and smile! You soften my hardest parts and I'm struck with awe at who and what you are and that we get to have you for our daughter. I'm so excited to see what you learn, how you grow, what you like and dislike, and all the other parts of you blossom this year! You are precious and I wish you more blessings then I can even imagine. Love, Mommy

42: July 11, 2010 Dear Viviana, Wow, I can't believe it has been a year already since your birth. Where did the time go! I get chills down my spine and the hair on my arms stand up when I think about how special to me your first year has been. You have grown tremendously since your mother and I brought you home from the hospital a year ago now. When I reflect back over this year, I think about all the things I saw you do for the first time. I remember when you first sat, rolled over, crawled on the floor, took your first steps and now walking. You have brought great joy and love to your father's heart. I loved waking up in the middle of the night, often tripping over the things on the floor in the darkness and giving you a bottle. I loved taking you with me for rides in the car, you loved to go get coffee for your mother and me. I remember the many early, cold mornings when I would get you bundled up and send you off to daycare. It broke my heart to leave you, but dressing you and caring for you every morning was special. I remember taking a bath with you for the first time - your skin was so soft. I would hold you near my chest and watch you as you would vigoursly kick the water. You always enjoyed your bath time. At around 7-8 months, I started taking you to Meijer with me. You loved sitting in the grocery cart and looking all around at all the people and bright fluorescent lights. It made me feel so proud to be your father and push you around in the store.
43: Often times you would get many smiles from all kinds of people. People would approach you and say "she's such a cutie." At 7 months I took you and Charlie for a sled ride. There was a lot of snow on the ground but it was a mild day. I walked up and down the open filed. You loved sticking your mittens out of the sled so that they would scrape the snow. At 8 months I took you for your first jog in the jogging stroller. You loved it! We went out on a sunny cool day in March. I bundled you up in your snow suit, hat, and mittens. I had you strapped in so tight that you couldn't move, but I didn't want you falling out. Halfway during our run I noticed that you fell asleep, it must have been a smooth ride. At 10-11 months you were babbling and beginning to walk. Vivi, let me just say now you're one funny little girl. I have never in my life laughed more then I have this past year. Nothing in this world brings me greater joy than watching you tumble around, babble, and point at just about everything you see. You have the cutest smile and with all those teeth, my goodness. Vivi, this first year has ended, but I can't wait to see what new and exciting adventures you will take your mother and me on. Every day I squeeze you and tell you how much I love you! Expect more of the same! Love Your, Papi/Daddy
