2: Ideas The idea to build canals was thought of by De Witt Clinton. He wanted to link New York city with the Great Lakes.
3: In 1814 Francis Cabot Lowell opened a textile mill in Waltham Massachusetts. For the first time all stages of cloth making were preformed under one roof. Lowell's mill launched the factory system, a system bringing manufacturing steps together in one place to increase efficiency.
4: Large businesses called corporations began to develop rapidly in the 1830s, when some legal obstacles for their formation were removed. The rise of these new corporations made it easier to sell stock to finance improvement and development.
6: Natural and Geographic The New Mexican territory became part of the United States in 1850 . It contained the current states of New Mexico, Arizona, and part of Texas. It was obtained in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
7: The Oregon Trail was a trial starting at the Mississippi River and ending in the area of Oregon. It was over 2000 miles long. The Oregon Trail was never an actual trail, but it was the general area where the settlers traveled west to the Oregon area.
8: Social The Era of Good Feelings was what a | Boston newspaper called the years 1812-1820. The President of this time was James Monroe. He won each election easily.
9: In 1817 the USA and Britain signed a treaty agreeing to set limits on the number of naval vessels each could have in the Great Lakes.
10: Political The Indian Removal Act was passed in 1830. It allowed the | federal government to pay Native Americans to move west.
11: In the election of 1824 the four candidates competing for presidency were William H. Crawford, Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, and John Quincy Adams. Adams won the election by getting Clay to use his power as Speaker of the House to defeat Jackson.
12: Economic In the year 1836 Martin Van Buren was | elected president. One year after that the country plunged into an economic depression. Businesses struggled and banks failed.
13: Second Bank of the United States started. This bank had the power to give out big loans to businesses. | The chapter of the First Bank of the United States was over in 1811. In 1816 the
14: Cultural In the fall of 1810 a priest, Miguel Hidalgo, led a rebellion against the Spanish government of Mexico. Hidalgo called for racial equality and the redistribution of land. The Spanish Defeated the revolutionary forces and Hidalgo was executed.
15: The Cherokee nation refused to give up it's land to the American government. | They had signed a treaty in the 1790s saying they were a separate nation. | However Georgia refused to recognize these laws. The Cherokee brought this to court and won.
16: Technology/Science In 1793 Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. This | is a machine that quickly and efficiently remove the seeds from cotton fiber. The cotton gin enabled one worker to clean cotton as fast as 50 people working by hand.
17: Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin, also invented interchangeable parts. These were identical machine parts that could be quickly put together to make a complete product.
18: Conclusion 1. Cause and effect. How did the invention of the cotton gin effect today? It revolutionized product manufacturing. 2. Change and continuity. What has changed over the years since the US began to move west? We have expanded in all directions and are a larger country.
19: 3. Using the past. How can we learn from the Indian Removal Act? We can use it as an example of past mistakes and use it to prevent making similar mistakes. 4. Through their eyes. How did the Cherokee view the Trail of Tears? They believed the settlers had no right forcing them off of their land and killing them.
20: 5. Turning points. How did the factory system transform people's lives? It changed the way household items were made and the rate at which they were produced. The faster the items are produced the faster the people can get them.
