1: September, 1939: Germany invades Poland, causing France, England, Australia, and New Zealand to declare war on the Third Reich.

2: September 27, 1940: Japan, Germany, and Italy sign the Tripartite Pact, forming the Axis powers.

3: November 20, 1940: Hungary joins the Axis powers.

4: November 23, 1940: Romania joins the Axis powers.

5: June 14, 1941: The United States freezes all German and Italian assets.

6: June 22, 1941: Operation Barbarossa begins, as Germany invades the Soviet Union.

7: Roosevelt freezes Japanese assets and suspends relations.

8: December 7, 1942: Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

9: December 8, 1941: Britain and the United States declare war on Japan. | December 11, 1941: Germany declares war on the United States.

10: WWII faced the use of many new weapons. The tank, which was still in development in WWI, was used heavily by both sides. New artillery weapons were developed and used, and the first intercontinental missile was used. Airplanes faced their first use as a weapon of war.

11: WWII is widely considered to have ended the Great Depression. Hundreds of thousands of men, who had been without jobs, entered into the army. Even those who had jobs were conscripted into the army to fight. Factories now had military supplies to make, and had to increase supplies of domestic goods.

12: "Rosie the Riveter' was an icon for women during WWII and afterwards. It symbolized that women could do the same work as men. Not only this, but Rosie inspired America to work harder, and help achieve victory in WWII.
