About Our Family | Kenneth & Heather Briggs were married on November 14, 2009. After settling into their new home, the newlyweds were eager to begin a family of their own. They decided to start trying in March of 2010. God granted them the miracle they were hoping for that very same month. Maybe the magical moment was a romantic date in Detroit for the Alicia Keys concert. Or, maybe it was during a weekend getaway to Milwaukee, WI to support the Oakland Grizzlies in the NCAA Final Four Tournament. Whatever the inspiration, it worked... Baby Briggs was on the way!
How We Found Out | Saturday, March 27, 2010: Suspecting she may be pregnant, Heather was eager to take a home pregnancy test. The first one came back positive, but the pregnancy line was very, very faint. So, she tried again. Same result. Heather wasn't sure if the results were accurate. She showed them to Ken and they decided she should make a doctor's appointment to verify the results. The doctor couldn't fit her in until Tuesday morning. Lacking patience and too eager to wait, Heather tried taking a digital pregnancy test Monday morning before work. The digital results showed the word "pregnant," so she realized it must be true! She was ecstatic. On Tuesday, the doctor verified she was indeed pregnant and figured out her due date was December 1, 2010. Baby Briggs would be a perfect 1st anniversary gift and a Christmas miracle! | Baby Briggs was probably already conceived when Ken and Heather took this picture on March 20th at Justin's wedding!
How We Told Our Family & Friends | Sunday, March 28 2010: Never good at keeping secrets, Heather told her parents after church that she and Ken may have good news. Eager to be grandparents, Lane and LuAnn were so excited to hear about the possibility of Baby Briggs! Heather's friends all guessed she was pregnant when she chose to have water while at Anne's birthday party on Saturday night. She verified the news with them on Sunday while everyone gathered at their house for a BBQ and MSU Spartan basketball game. The rest of their family and friends found out through the grapevine, telephone calls, and text messages. Good news sure travels fast. One thing was for sure, everyone was delighted to hear about and meet Baby Briggs! | Heather is six weeks pregnant on April 10th for her 30th birthday and Sara's wedding!
 1st Ultrasound | Baby Briggs
May 13, 2010 11 weeks Heather took her father, Lane, with her to a Dr. appointment on May 6th, but it was too early to hear the baby's heartbeat. Heather was so disappointed. But, the following week, Ken and Heather returned for their first ultrasound. Baby Briggs was healthy and growing fast with a strong heartbeat. The due date, December 1st, was verified. Heather couldn't believe this active baby was growing inside her belly! Ken was overjoyed and proudly put the ultrasound picture in his pocket for safe keeping. He was eager to put up the pictures in his office at work and show off Baby Briggs! Heather rushed home to frame these precious memories!
Progress | Waiting for Baby Briggs.... Summer 2010 | While baby Briggs was busy growing, Ken and Heather kept busy as well. They enjoyed a beautiful Memorial Day Weekend in Lincoln, MI at Lost Lake Woods Private Club with the Kirshmans. and attended several live concerts including Santana at the DTE Energy Music Theater and Anthony Hamilton, Kem, and Jaheim at the Fox Theater in Detroit. Ken started working out a lot and completed a 100 mile bike ride (on a day with 40 mph winds) and began re-doing the basement. Heather taught summer school, rode the stationary bike at the gym, and enjoyed long walks in the summer sun through downtown Fenton. True relaxation was found boating on Loon Lake and sitting on the back deck listening to jazz music and eating Ken's famous BBQ ribs. Yum, Yum! As Heather's belly started to grow, Ken and Heather shared cuddle time with Baby Briggs too!
 12-1-10 | It's a Girl! | 3D/4D | No baby fat yet...
July 1, 2010 18 weeks Baby Briggs had an anatomical ultrasound. This was a magical moment for Heather, Ken and her parents as they learned Baby Briggs was a healthy baby girl. Heather and Ken decided to name her Kaylee Marie Briggs. (This is a combination of all of the middle names of her maternal role models: Heather Kay, Jessie Lee, and LuAnn Marie) Heather cried because she was overjoyed and she knew daddy really wanted a little girl! | Big Brain=Smart Baby! | "Baby Bump" at 20 weeks/5 months. Heather can feel Kaylee moving, light as a butterfly and the occasional kick. Ken and Heather lay in bed at night and hold their little girl. They pray she continues to grow strong and healthy and tell her how excited they are to meet her.
Kaylee is starting to kick and move more frequently. It feels like something is flicking the inside of Heather's belly very softly. It makes her laugh and smile every time. 18: 32 Weeks, 8 Months October 5, 2010 | Heather and Ken were getting very anxious for Kaylee's birth. Kaylee was active in Heather's belly, kicking her ribs, and getting hiccups. Heather's belly was now the size of a small basketball and her belly button had pushed outward. A pregnancy line emerged, but luckily there were no stretch marks. Heather waddled her way through her long walks and wondered how she was going to endure eight more weeks of an expanding belly and pregnancy aches and pains.
Surprise! Baby Briggs is coming early! | After a 14 hour work day, Ken catches a quick nap at the hospital before the excitement begins! | Proud Grandpa! | Nervous, but excited new Mommy!
Progress | Happy Birthday! Kaylee Marie Briggs October 27, 2010 | Kaylee's birth story begins on Monday, October 25th. Heather was extremely tired that day and very uncomfortable from the intense pressure on her pelvis. But, she was determined not to complain because she still had six more weeks to go! So, she sucked it up and still went for her daily walk. Little did she know the baby had already dropped and Kaylee would be ready to make her debut soon. Tuesday morning, Heather woke up with a surge of energy and felt great, so she went for another long walk after school. Ken was working late, so she decided to put together a packing list for the hospital and create an outline for her birthing plan. She finished at 9:30 p.m., got ready for bed, and laid down on the couch to relax and watch TV until Ken got home from work. Suddenly, she felt a surge of wetness. She was embarassed to think she had peed her pants, but the water kept coming, so she soon realized her water must have broken six weeks early! Luckily, Ken arrived home at 10 p.m. to find Heather waiting anxiously. Together, they quickly packed their bags, called her parents, and drove to Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc, MI. Heather remembers trying to stay calm because the whole process might be very long. Ken focused on deep breathing so that he would not hyper ventilate from anticipation and nervousness. Heather was 2 cm dilated by 11 p.m. when they got to the hospital and she started to feel contractions when she was put into the birthing room at midnight.
Heather will be forever grateful to her mother who held her hand and stood by her side as her birthing coach throughout the entire process. Ken tried to offer as much moral support as he could and Grandpa helped calm Ken's nerves and took pictures. Heather remembers reviewing the birthing books with her mom to gather last minute advice before the labor progressed. But, much to everyone's surprise, the contractions became stronger, growing in intensity and duration very quickly. There would be no resting, meditation, or breathing exercises to ease the process. Because the birth progressed so quickly she was unable to get an epidural. Luckily, there were no complications, she only had to push a few times, and Kaylee Marie Briggs was born at 3 a.m. on Wednesday, October 27, 2010. After the birth, Heather remembers holding the baby on her chest, grinning ear to ear, and saying "I had a baby, I had a baby...that wasn't so bad!" Grandma laughed at this as she remembers Heather yelling towards the end. Grandpa exclaimed about the whoosh of fluids and a miraculous catch by the doctor, and Ken told Heather how beautiful and perfect the baby was, how much he loved her, and was proud of her. The doctors whisked Kaylee away to the special nursery to help her adjust to this new world. Ken stood by her side proudly, until he briefly passed out on the nursery floor from the overwhelming emotions. Luckily, he was okay.
