1: - Plot Summary - | A Raisin In The Sun was about an African American family whose life is about to change because of a $10,000 life insurance check. They come face to face with economic problems, Therefore they are all counting on that money to make a better living. The eldest son Walter took the money and invested in buying a liquor store. He gets ripped off by one of the guys he associated with. The guys ran away with his money and left his sister without money to go to medical school with. His mother then takes the rest of the money to buy a new and bigger house in a good neighborhood. Her pride will not let her back down from living in a racist neighborhood.
3: Walter Lee Younger - the protagonist. He is a dreamer. He wants to be rich and have a wealthy family. He wants to invest his fathers insurance money into a Liqour store. Beneatha Younger "Bennie"- Mama's daughter and Walter's sister. Intelligent 20 year old who attends college. She is better educated than the rest of the family. Lena Younger "Mama"- Walter and Bennie's mom. The head of the family. She is religious and maternal. Ruth Younger- Walter's wife and Travis' mother. She takes care of the Younger's apartment. She tries to solve her marriage problems with Walter. Travis Younger - Walter and Ruth's son. He sleeps in a sofa in the living room. Earns money by bagging grocery. Like to play with the neighborhood friends. Bobo & Willy Harris - Walter's friends Mr. Lidner - he is from a committee of the neighborhood they are moving into
4: Themes | There are a few different themes in this story. The main one is the idea of holding on to a dream. But the main theme is the presence of racisim | 1) Dreams, Hope, and Plans 2) Race 3) Pride 4) Family 5) Poverty 6) Suffering 7) Sacrifice 8) Gender
5: Quotes | "I want so many things that they are driving me kind of crazy Mama – look at me" - Walter | What Walter means is that he's being overwhelmed with not having everything he wants to have in life. | " Theres always something left to love. And if you aint learned that, You aint learned nothing. " - Mama | What Mama means by this is that Beneatha should love her brother no matter what. She should not let her greed and her pride get in the way of loving her brother.
6: Events | Walter takes the check without telling his mom or family , and invests in the liquor store. Willy takes the money and disappears. Mama takes whats left of the money and buys a house in a white neighborhood. The president of the neighborhood committee went to Mama's old house and was trying to restrain them from moving in by buying the home. Mama reneged the offer and continued to move into the new house ready to face any consequences .
7: The play occurs after World War II, in southside Chicago. Most of the story takes place at the Younger's apartment. | Settings
8: Author Biography | The author of this book is Lorraine Hansberry. She was born May 19, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. She was an African American typewriter. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A Raisin in the Sun was one of her best known work because it was inspired by her family's struggles against racial housing laws in Washington Park. A lot of people related to this book.She worked for the newspaper Freedom. She became the youngest playwright at age 29. She was the 5th woman to recieve the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. She suffered a long term battle of pancreatic cancer. She died on January 12, 1965 at the age of 34. She made a big contribution to the understanding of discrimination and abortion in Africa.
