FC: Uses ... and Misuses of the Ellipsis

The ellipsis consists of THREE evenly spaced dots (periods) with spaces between the ellipsis and surrounding letters or other marks. Ex: "Juan thought and thought ... and then thought some more." Ex: The ceremony honored twelve brilliant athletes ... visiting the U.S. If the omission comes after the end of a sentence, the ellipsis will be placed after the period, making a total of four dots. ... In mid-sentence, a space should appear between the first and last ellipsis marks and the surrounding letters. The MLA Handbook recommends using square brackets on either side of the ellipsis points to distinguish between an ellipsis that you've added and the ellipses that might have been in the original text. Such a bracketed ellipsis in a quotation would look like this: "Bohr [...] used the analogy of parallel stairways [...]" (Smith 55). An ellipsis should be spaced fore-and-aft to separate it from the text, but when it combines with other punctuation, the leading space disappears and the other punctuation follows. Ex: i ... j k... . l..., l l, ... l m... ? n...! | RULES | http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/marks/ellipsis.htm

packet should have a space after it | no space before or after the ellipsis | too many periods to be an ellipsis | not enough periods to be an ellipsis | both ellipsis attempts don't satisfy the number of periods needed

part 2 | (from top to bottom, left to right) no space before ellipsis; too many periods; too many periods; too many periods; not enough periods; too many periods; too many periods & not enough periods; too many periods; too many periods & no meaning

Online Articles | should include a space before each of these ellipses

Eats, Shoots & Leaves | there's a space after the ellipsis when there is punctuation after it

? | if she was trying to end the sentence with an ellipsis, a period must be used along with the ellipsis. | Eats, Shoots & Leaves

Assignment Sheet?? | The ellipsis can also take the place of the 'etc.'. This sentence says: "Using the same ONE punctuation mark ... Look in newspapers, magazines, shopper ads, etc. etc.." As it it repetitive, it should be revised to say, "newspapers, magazines, shopper ads, ..." or "newspapers, magazines, shopper ads, etc."

FailYouTube | This page and the following have too many or not enough periods

SAT Prep books can be wrong too! | Each of these have 4 periods
