Geographers have an important job. They are the people that tell us about how the earth looks. They also tell us how people on earth are different from each other. They use the six elements of geography!
Spatial Relations means “relations in space”: how places, people, and features of the earth are connected because of their locations. The exact latitude and longitude at which a place is found on the globe is its absolute location. Relative location describes a places location in relation to another place. These words are used to tell or show someone where you are on the Earth.
If you wanted to tell your friend where you live you could use relative location to give them directions. If you live near big green trees and pink flowers you could tell your friend,"I live by the big green trees and the pink flowers."
Places and Regions A place is a particular space on earth with physical and human meaning. A region, larger than a place, is a group of places that are united by shared characteristics. A formal region, or uniform region, is an area defined by a common characteristic. A functional region is a central place and the outlying areas linked to it by transit systems, for example. A perceptual region is defined by popular feelings and images rather than by objective data.
Your house is a place. It's the place where you live.
Physical Systems Physical systems- volcanoes, floods, and hurricanes shaped the earths surface.
The Earth looks the way it looks because of physical systems.
Human Systems: People affect the earth by settling it, forming societies, and migrating. People also move goods and ideas to new places.
All around the earth people form cultures, cities, and ways of life. What they do affects the Earth. They form human systems.
Environment and Society People affect the environment by clearing or planting forests, building industries and cities, and hunting animals. Features of the environment such as mountain ranges and deserts often pose barriers to human migration.
If a building is built and animals can't live in that area anymore, that is people affecting the environment, People cant live in the ocean because its all water. That is a way the environment affects us.
Uses of Geography Geographers provide important information about the planet's physical features processes, living things, and human systems. Such information describes the planet and contributes to planing for future needs.
