FC: Olafe Cornellis' Journey To America | By Carter Castillo

This journal about my trip to America, is property of Olafe Cornellis if found return to the "Poland's best" donut shop

Date: October 17, 1954 Dear Journal, Today is my 8th birthday! I’m so excited, I wonder what my present is? I found my mum, she said happy birthday and handed me a box. I opened it up and inside was... A teddy bear! I yelled YAY! I read the letter aloud,“Happy 8th Birthday Olafe! Here is something very special, something you have wanted for many years now. As you look at this you are thinking it’s an object, but not exactly. So just look at the bottom of the box and find your prize!” So I looked at the bottom and I gave my mom a big hug I was so excited! want to know what it was? It was a ticket to get on a ship heading to America! I’m finally leaving Poland and going to America were I can build a better future, and meet my dad! See during my birth my dad had to take a boat to America and escape Poland because of refugee. My mom said my dad is a secret spy/assassin for the Poland army, navy, and air force. And people were starting to hunt him down so before anyone got hurt he left Poland to go to America. And because of this Poland just transported him to the U.S Army. He went to America to let America finish the battle that he accidently started. That was 5 days before my birth, but now I will get to meet my dad the ticket said the ship was leaving tomorrow.

Date October 18, 1954 Today’s the day I go on the ship to America. I just said good-bye to Poland. It's going to be so much fun! I'm really excited, I can't even wait. Ok I'm writing while getting on the boat, I took my first step on the boat. Now let's find our room, it was small, cramped, it smelled bad, there wasn't any fresh air. I thought this would be fun. But really now I think it's going to be miserable. But that doesn't matter as much as seeing my father does, and I hope my mom's right that in America I will have a better future. That matters a lot more than the boat we take there. Know I wonder. How long will my voyage to America will be? Here's what I brought, I brought my journal, (of course) my teddy bear, my ticket, (I'm gonna need that) and a solid gold amulet that my dad gave me it's special to me and I will never lose it. Here we go the boat just got off the docks! I'm going to America!!!

Date: December 23, 1954 Dear, Journal After 67 days on an old, gross, stupid ship. I woke up to a man. See, our captain was really bad at his job and he not only took the long way to this place called “Ellis Island”, but he also got lost and the ship landed in Mexico instead America so everyone got off for the day and explored Mexico some stayed there, until we went back on the ship at 7:00 but at least I ate a “taco”! And then captain kept going in circles until someone pointed out the “Statue Of Liberty”. Ya it was really annoying! My first sight if this Statue of Liberty was, Wow a tall green lady on America America’s better than Poland already! It’s amazing how much I think I’m gonna like America. I can’t wait to see my Pa! Mama said before we see Pa, we have to pass a lot of tests, exams, waiting, and more boring stuff. But it’s going to be worth it. I told Mama I was scared, but she told me it’s going to be all right. Here we go I have to stop writing for a little, I will take lots of pictures.

Still Date: December 23,1954 1 hour later... Yay! I just passed the medical exam and this thingy that finds any metal you have. Know they are going to ask me and Mama a lot of questions now. 45 minutes later... I just passed the all the questions, and I was right there was a lot. Now for some odd reason I have to climb some stairs I don’t know why. I will take a picture of the stairs. I passed, now I have to do all that boring waiting. 12 hours later... Ok, Mama just traded in her Poland money for some American money. Know we’re going to the kissing post and Mama said Pa will be there waiting for us! So I ran as fast as I could, but then I feel on my face Ow. But I didn’t care I still kept running and I saw him I knew it was him because Mama showed me pictures of him. And he knew it was me because Mama sent him some photos of me. I gave him a big hug. I started crying for two reasons. One, because my face hurt, and two, I was so happy to meet my Pa. He’s a really nice Pa, he plays with me, he’s always happy, he helps me learn, he helps me practice at games, and so much more. The best part is that he fixed my face, it’s his job something called a plastic surgeon.
