3: The Channel Islands are a chain of eight islands in the Pacific Ocean off of the lower coast of California. it borders the Santa Barbara Channel in the United States. Of the eight islands associated, five are part of the Channel Islands National Park. The Channel Islands at low elevations are frost-free and are one of the few non-frost areas in all of the states. It snows very rarely, on higher mountain peaks. During World War II it was seized by the United States as a military control location and tourism was thereby halted. | The Channel Islands are a chain of eight islands in the Pacific Ocean off of the lower coast of California. it borders the Santa Barbara Channel in the United States. 5: Mammal | Common Name: Harbor Seal Scientific Name: Phoco Vitulina Scientific Classification: Kingdom- Animalia Phylum- Chordata Class- Mammalia Order- Carnivora Suborder- Pinnipedia Family- Phocidae Genus- Phoca Species- Vitulina | Harbor Seals are captured in fishing gear like gill nets, trawls, purse seines, and weirs causing them to drown. They are victimized to multiple boat strikes, oil spill exposures, chemical contaminations, power plant toxic waste, and are constantly harassed in their native environment. They are protected because of their decline in population because of these factors. Laws say that they have to be limited in hunting labor seals, and bounty hunting is not allowed with them. There is an agreement between the NMFS and the Alaska Native Harbor Seal Commission to "promote the health of seals to protect culture, promote research, and more. Also is protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. | Harbor Seals are captured in fishing gear like gill nets, trawls, purse seines, and weirs causing them to drown.
