FC: Cusco | Peru | Historical Capital of the Incan Empire
1: The city of Cusco is located in the Andes Mountains of Peru at a altitude of 11,000 ft.
2: Our family visited the city of Cusco and surrounding area in 2010.
3: My children enjoyed walking through the narrow walkways that are common in many old cities.
4: Plaza de Armas | The Plaza de Armas, or town square, is an important place in all Peruvian Cities. In the above picture you see the Catholic cathedral. Cusco's must important festival, Inti Raymi, is celebrated here.
6: Cusco was the political, military, and cultural center of the Inca empire, which stretched up and down the Andes, from Ecuador through Bolivia and all the way to Chile.
7: Everywhere you go, you see a mix of the ancient with the modern. Here is a picture of a high school.
8: Santo Domingo Convent | I took these pictures at a convent that was built on top of Inca Ruins. When the Spaniards took control of Cusco, they built the convent on top of what had been an important Inca temple to worship the sun.
9: These buildings now also house an archaeological museum and an art gallery.
11: . | Sacsayhuaman This was an Inca fortress that was built on top of the hill overlooking the city of Cusco. It is a magnificent sight to see. It was made of large boulders that were carefully cut to fit together without the need for mortar.
12: This a local artist. We bought this beautiful drawing from him of a Peruvian little boy.
13: As previously mentioned, Cusco is a city where you constantly see the ancient mixed with the modern! This McDonald's is located right in the Plaza de Armas of Cusco.
