FC: Five Themes of Terror
2: Adam Moser is a student at Indiana Elementary School in the 5th grade. His class is studying the 5 themes of geography. Even though all of his classmates say its so easy he is having a lot of trouble with it. Adam's teacher notices how hard he is trying and that he is still having trouble so he decides to give him some extra help.
3: After class is over, the teacher calls Adam over to his desk. When he arrives he sees a open textbook on the page about the first theme of geography. The teacher points at the highlighted word "Location" it states,"the geographical situation of people and things. The teacher says, "There are two types of location, relative and absolute." "Absolute is the use of latitude and longitude bars on a map or globe. You can find any exact location on the globe with this method." The teacher points at relative and says, "Relative location is a little bit different, relative means in relation to a landmark, building, street, or specific location.
4: Adam tells his teacher that he understands the first theme and ask for help on the others as well. The teacher then turns a few pages and opens it at "Place." The book states, "Place is defined by anything in it. Every place has special features that give it personality.
5: This school building is a place that includes windows, walls, doors, desk, and pencils.
6: A region is a place defined by certain similar characteristics. Those characteristics can be physical, natural, human, or culture.
7: This map is a map of the Rocky Mountain region.
8: Movement is the way, people, products, information, and ideas travel from one place to another. Movement can be local as in how did you get to school today, or global as in how did humans get to north America.
9: This is a map of how products, people, and disease spread in to and from Europe.
10: "So Adam have you learned a lot today?" "Yes teacher I have, but it seems like there is still more to learn." "Oh yeah! I must have forgotten the last theme. Its called Human-Environment Interaction. Its all about the relationship between humans and their environment."
11: In this photo, the humans found that they could make much more use of their land by cutting into it and making levels. Its an example of humans acting on the environment.
12: "Anything else that you would like me to help you with Adam?" "Well, I'm still kind of confused on how the environment acts upon humans. Do you think you could help me out with that?"
13: "This is a perfect example of the environment acting on the humans. Part of the small town on the mountain side was demolished by the landslide. Now you should fully understand your 5 themes!"
