FC: Our Insect Project Will Eubanks, James Diaz, Ronak Mody

Insects are arthropods with three body sections, six legs, one pair of antennae, an usually one or two pairs of wings.

The three sections of an insect are the head, thorax, and abdomen.

Insects have compound eyes, which have many lenses.

Insects begin their life as eggs.

Then, metamorphosis changes them into an adult.

The two types of metamorphosis are complete and gradual metamorphosis.

You are probably familiar with complete metamorphosis. In this process, there are four stages.

They are egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

In the larva stage, the insect looks very different from the adult.

Next is the pupal stage. This is the "cocoon" we think of.

Finally, the pupa becomes an adult.

The next type of metamorphosis is called gradual metamorphosis.

Instead of the larva and pupa stages, there are two nymph stages.

These are the nymph and larger nymph.

Nymphs are small, growing versions of the adult insect.

If it was living, or it is living, some kind of insect will eat it.

Most insects have specialized mouth parts designed for the type of food they eat.

Insects have various ways of defending themselves.

 The most common is camouflage.

Other insects closely resemble another organism.

There are 200,000 times more insects than people.

Some insect species can be helpful, while others can be harmful.

Many species may also carry disease.

However, the vast majority of insects are not harmful to humans.

Unfortunately for the ones that are, we humans have ways to get rid of them.

Biological controls are used to control insect populations.

Biological controls are natural predators introduced to the insect's environment.

These controls are much more effective and better for the environment than pesticides.

Pesticides are chemicals released into the environment to kill insects.

Unfortunately, these pesticides kill many other things besides insects.

DDT is a well known pesticide that nearly caused the bald eagle species to become extinct.
