1: Home of the free...Because of the Brave | Born on November 19, 1831 in Ohio. He and his three siblings grew up in relative poverty because his father died and his when he was a baby and his mother had trouble supporting the family. Graduated Williams College in Massachusetts in 1856. Garfield began his career as in instructor in classical languages at the Eclectic Institute then became its president from 1857-1861. Garfield became president of the united states in 1880.Garfield was shot by Charles J. Guiteau. After Garfield's shooting, repeated probing for the bullet with non-sterile instruments resulted in blood poisoning which eventually killed him on September 19, 1881. Chester Arthur became President after Garfield's death.

Garfield was the first left-handed president. He was the last of seven presidents born in a log cabin James A. Garfield could write with both hands. Sometimes he amused people by writing Greek with one hand and Latin with the other! Garfield, a strong man, standing over six feet in height, personally carried his mother up and down the White House stairs.
