On a beautiful sunny day Josh and his dad decided to go on a boat trip. Josh has always been very interested in marine life, because of his goldfish named Guppy. His dad decided to teach him about the food chain.
Josh learned that humans are at the top of the food chain, but being at the top comes with a price. They have to make sure that what we are eating ate good things before it.
After for awhile Josh decided to jump into the ocean. His dad fastened on his life jacket and Josh Jumped in to find himself surrounded by black instead of blue.
"Josh,, Josh!" Exclaimed his dad, "Get out of the water it's dirty!" Josh quickly climbed back into the boat and looked into the water and his dad explained that he just jumped into a pool of oil.
"There must have been an oil spill here." explained the dad. Josh had a confused look on his face. "this is what i meant by being on top come with a cost." The dad explained further, "All these fish here in this part of the ocean are not good to eat anymore because a human must have had an oil rig explode."
Josh looked around and saw the oil and didn't understand how this could have happened. He wondered if the fish he caught would be good enough to eat even though they were swimming in oil.
His dad made him throw the fish back in to water because he explained how the algae the guppy would eat would become contaminated , which would cause goldfish or other fish like Guppy to get sick then the other animals like Josh and his dad to get sick because the fish would be bad.
Josh looked over the edge of the boat to see all the fish dying. This broke his heart because he couldn't imagine that happening to Guppy. He decided to do something about it.
Josh decided to write to the government to recommend stopping off shore drilling. He knew that his voice wasn't enough to get their attention. He brought the petition to school and got his classmates to sign it.
All of Josh's friend signed it and supported Josh with his idea. Josh sent off the letter with a hopeful mind that things will get better. A few weeks later he got a letter back that the government really appreciated his letter and decided to do something about the off shore drilling.
