2: John Steinbeck (February 27, 1902 – December 20, 1968) John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902. Throughout his life, he dreamed of being a writer. He went to Stanford University and eventually left with no degree to move to New York. He didn't get his early work published, but when he did, he did it big. John Steinbeck is noted for his Pulitzer prize for his book The Grapes of Wrath. some other notable writings he had were A Cup of Gold, his first book, and his book Tortilla Flat. He died in 1968 at the age of 66.
5: La Paz, Mexico May 3rd, 1535, Hernan Cortés first arrived at what is now La Paz, Mexico. La paz has had a history of being forcefully conquered by many explorers. The city in the 1900s had an extreme of lifestyles from the richest of rich to the poorest of poor, and today it lies as a major tourism port in Mexico.

10: All is good and well until a scorpion crawls into coyotitos box and stings him. Juanta tries to suck out as much poison as she can ge out, but she calls for a doctorto take a look at it. The doctor refuses to come, so the family goes to La Paz to visit a doctor. The doctor refuses to see Coyotito and uses the excuse of "being out of town". Kino gets angry and punches the wall and hurts himself. | Chapter 1
11: Kino, juanta, and coyotito go to the beach. Kino rows his canoe out to sea to try to hunt for oysters. Juanta prays for the "pearl that might be found" while kino dives down to find the oysters. Kino sees a glimmer in one of the pearls and picks it up to go open it. Kino opens up the clam to find the pearl of the world. | Chapter 2
12: Chapter 3 | After hearing the news of the great pearl, the society and the doctor change their attitudes toward kino and his family. kino curiously became every man's ememy. The doctor tricks them into a fake treatment for coyotito's scorpion sting, and later an intruder comes into kino's hut and tries to steal the pearl. When kino tries to kill the intruder, he gets knocked unconscious.
13: Chapter 4 | Kino and Juanta take coyotito to La Paz to see about selling their great pearl. The pearl buyers try to cheat coyotito into a lower price. Kino takes advice from Juan Tomas and later that night, kino tries to stop another intruder from entering his home, and kino again gets knocked out by a strike to the head.
14: Chapter 5 | In the morning, kino wakes up to see juanta dig the pearl out and take it out of the house. Kino follows her, and right before juanta throws the pearl away into the sea, kino grabs her arm, hits her, kicks her, and beats her for what she has done. That night juanta finds kino on the ground after a fight with another man who kino has just killed. Kino is hurt and he thinks that they have taken the pearl, but juanta picked it up off the groud. Kino goes back to the village to find his house burning and he houses with his brother, juan tomas, for the night.
15: Chapter 6 | Kino and juanta escape with coyotito to the mountains. He constantly has to be smart about his steps because he knows he is being tracked. Kino brushes his tracks and goes in wheel ruts so that no sign of their presence will be seen. Kino sees the trackers and is crouched, naked (for camouflage purposes), behind a tree when coyotito begins to cry out. The trackers believe that it is a coyote cry. Just as kino jumps out, the trackers shoot into the cave. Kino kills all 3 trackers, but when the book suddenly jumps to another scene, the reader finds out a surprise. The surprise is that when the trackers shot into the cave, they killed coyotito. Kino and juanta go down to the beach and juanta lets kino toss the pearl of evil back into the sea.
16: Moral: When a person wants something bad enough, he will let it run his life, and if it consumes him, he is willing to put everything else behind his own desires even if it means living an evil life.
