1: 2 0 1 2 | A balance had to be kept between the free states and slave states. Missouri enters as a slave state, and Maine enters as a free state. The imaginary line 36.30 is created. In the North it turned millions against slavery. Northerners became aware of slavery in a more personal level. 3: Dred Scott was taken to Minnesota by his master and stepped on "free" soil. Because of the Missouri Compromise, Minnesota was declared free land. He then sued for his freedom and lost the case because the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional. Also, all the territories were open to slavery. Slave holders were very happy, but northerners were enraged. | Dred Scott Case

4: Battle of Bull Run First Battle of the Civil War. Rose Greenhow sent a secret message to the Confederate states to alert them of the Union's plan. Confederate waited for the Union at Bull Run. Confederates beat the Union soldiers.

5: Battle of Antietam Union blockades the Confederates with the Anaconda Plan. Divided the Confederates by taking control of the Mississippi River. Bloodiest day in war, and both sides lose a lot of men. Because of this battle, Abraham Lincoln finds a way to help the slaves.

6: Gettysburg Lincoln created the Emancipation Proclamation, which says that all slaves that are captured by Union would be taken to the North. Drafting began because their were few soldiers left to fight. Union defeated the Confederates, and they never attacked the Union again.

7: BEGAN SINCE LINCOLN WROTE THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION. HE WAS GOING TO MAKE 10% OF THE CONFEDERATES PLEDGE LOYALTY TO THE UNION, BUT HE DIED. A FORMER CONFEDERATE STATE COULD REJOIN THE UNION ONCE IT HAD WRITTEN A NEW STATE CONSTITUTION, ELECTED A NEW STATE GOVERNMENT, REPEALED ITS ACT OF SECESSION, CANCELED ITS WAR DEBTS, AND RATIFIED THE 13 ADMENDMENT WHICH ABOLISHED SLAVERY. PRESIDENTIAL RECONSTRUCTION WAS MADE BY PRESIDENT JOHNSON. ALL SOUTHERNERS HAD TO PLEDGE LOYALTY AND WOULD PETITIOLN HIM INDIVIDUALLY FOR PARDON. | PRESEDENTIAL RECONSTRUCTION

8: FREEDMENS BEREAU | HELPED FORMER SLAVES CALLED FREEDMEN. WAS MADE TO HELP FREEDMEN TRANSITION FROM SLAVERY TO FREEDOM. THE BUREAU WAS RUN BY THE MILITARY DEPARTMENT. PROVIDED FOOD AND MEDICAL CARE FOR BOTH FREEDMEN AND WHITES IN THE SOUTH. HELPED FREEDMEN BARGAIN FOR WAGES AND GOOD WORKING CONDITIONS. IT ALSO DISTRIBUTED LAND TO LOYAL REFUGEES AND FREEDMEN. THOUSANDS OF FORMER SLAVES,BOTH YOUNG AND OLD, FLOCKED TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS. PRESIDENT JOHNSON OPPOSED THE FREEDMEN’S BEREAU.

9: BLACK CODES WAS USED FOR THREE MAJOR REASONS. LEFT FREEDMEN WITH LITTLE FREEDOM.LIMITED THE RIGHTS OF FREEDMEN. HELPED PLANTERS FIND WORKERS TO REPLACE THEIR SLAVES .WAS ALSO USED TO KEEP FREEDMEN AT THE BOTTOM OF SOCIAL ORDER IN THE SOUTH. CODES PREVENTED FREEDMEN FROM GROWING THEIR OWN CROPS. FREEDMEN WERE PROHIBITTED FROM ENTERING TOWNS WITHOUT PERMISSION. THEY LOST THE FREEDOM OF CHOOSING THEIR OWN JOBS.

10: AMENDMENT 13 ABOLISHED SLAVERY. AMENDMENT 14 DECLARED FORMER SLAVES TO BE CITIZENS WITH FULL CIVIL RIGHTS. AMENDMENT 15 GAVE ALL CITIZENS RIGHT TO VOTE, “SHALL NOT BE DENIED ON ACCOUNT OF RACE COLOR OF PREVIOUS CONDIDTION OF SERVITUDE. “ AMENDMENTS WERE MADE TO HELP FREEDMEN HAVE MORE RIGHTS, AND TO HELP THEM BECAUSE OF THE BLACK CODES. | AMENDMENTS

11: KKK | WHITES FORMED SECRET SOCIETIES TO DRIVE AFRICAN AMERICANS OUT OF POLITICAL LIFE. THE MOST INFAMOUS WAS THE KU KLUX KLAN. THEY THRETENNED BLACK VOTERS AND OFFICE HOLDERS. THOSE WHO DIDN’T LISTEN WERE BEATEN, SCARED, AND EVEN MURDERED. MANY WHITES ARE STILL INFLUENCED BY THE KKK. PEOPLE MADE A BIG PROFIT BECAUSE NEW MEMBERS HAD TO PAY FOR THEIR COSTUMES. KKK STILL EXISTS TODAY AS “ CHURCH OF THE AMERICAN KNIGHTS KU KLUX KLAN. “
