2: Pythagoras Pythagoras of Samos was born between580 and 572 BC and died between 500 and 490 BC. He was born on the island of Aegean, off the coast of Asia Minor. He left his native city for Croton, Calabria, in Southern Italy, to escape the tyrannical government of Polycrates when he was young. He went to Memphis in Egypt and study with the priests there. He moved to Italy and start a religious order of people called pothagerians. According to legend, the way Pythagoras discovered that musical notes could be translated into mathematical equations was when one day he passed blacksmiths at work, and thought that the sounds emanating from their anvils being hit were beautiful and harmonious and decided that whatever scientific law caused this to happen must be mathematical and could be applied to music. Pythagoras believed in something called the "harmony of the spheres." He believed that the planets and stars moved according to mathematical equations, which corresponded to musical notes and thus produced a symphony.

4: Math in Space Earth is the planet we live on and the one with water and life as we know it. It is the third (as in number 3) largest planet of the nine planets that orbit the sun. The planets provide a lot of interesting numbers and measurements. There are still many questions and unfinished equations about space. One of the biggest mysteries about space is the existence of black holes. A black hole is a region of space in which the gravitational field is so powerful that nothing, including light, can escape its pull. Some people say that black holes are portals to other worlds or other dimensions, but good old mathematicians (as in people who dedicate there lives to math) know that there is nothing inside black holes.

10: Interview with Elvis Presley For our magazine, we interviewed rock legend Elvis Presley about math. Here is what he had to say: -What do you think about math Mr. Presley? -I uh… I think it’s really important when it comes to playing music. Especially the guitar, finding all the notes and everything, its just simple math. - Interesting. So Elvis, most kids think math is a useless topic. Do you agree? -No I do not. I think math is a key category in education and is used everyday. -I couldn’t have put it better myself. So, is there any advice you would like to give to our readers? -Yes as a matter of fact, there is. If you play an instrument, always practice all the time. Who knows maybe you will be famous too. And remember, math can help with anything. Whether it be finding the circumference of a bass drum, or the slope of the neck of a guitar. So practice anytime you can, study hard, and take it easy. -Thank you Mr. Presley. -Any time.
