FC: My Journey To America By: Michael Holtzinger
My home town is Berlin Germany. I am coming to America with my family for the purpose of more freedom and for more job opportunities. In my family I have a Mom named Andrea and a Dad named Brian. I have one sister named Lauren who is 15 years old and I am 12 years old. I had a dog named Max but we had to sell him to come to America because you are not allowed to bring pets with you
This is the boat That I am on and will arrive in New York in. | February 21, 1942. I just got on the ship to that will take me to Ellis Island. My room is extremely small. My mom and my two sisters are in one room and my dad, brother, and I am in another room. It is kind of sad because they are on two opposite sides of the ship.
February 23, 1942. I am starting to catch a cold from staying on the deck for to long because I can't get enough of fresh air. The bathrooms on this boat are very disgusting and make me even sicker. | This is a picture of my ship that I am coming to New York in.
February 26, 1942. I have a really bad cold, but I can see Ellis Island! Everyone is cheering louder than I have ever heard anybody cheer before. Ellis Island looks beautiful. | This is a picture of Ellis Island.
This is a picture of our family's passports. | These are the boots that I wore on my whole journey to Ellis Island | February 26, 1942. I am sitting in a waiting room waiting to get closer to being in America!
February 26, 1942 I didn't make it past the medical exam because of my terrible cold. They said I have to wait here for at least three days until I am better. | I now forever hate doctors because all of my other family members got through and are in America while I have to wait here until I am better.
This is where I have been sleeping for two nights. | February 28, 1942. I am getting better and hope to be out of here very soon. The food here is very different that the food in Germany.
March 2, 1942. I passed the medical exam after four days of having to wait at Ellis Island Immigration Station. I am at the money exchanger and I just realized that I only have ten American dollars! | I can't believe I am in America. I love it even more than I though I would.
