The truth is defined as honesty, reliability, or veracity.
Many historians tried to find the truth as accurately as they could. You could compare them to private investigators.
Knowing that he organized his facts in an orderly manner meant that he wanted to know where his facts were at any given time.
Herodotus also arranged his facts in a well constructed and vivid narrative.
The only work he is known to have produced is "The Histories". This was a great masterpiece.
"The Histories" is a record of his "inquiry", being an investigation of the origins of the Persian Wars and including a wealth of information.
Modern scholars generally turn to Herodotus's own writing for reliable information. This shows that they believe in his writing to be true.
