FC: The Pearl by John Steinbeck

1: Brittany McKenzie 6th hour November 1, 2010

2: John Steinbeck was born on February 27, 1902. Mr. Steinbeck wrote a total of twenty-seven novels in his life. In 1919, Steinbeck graduated from high school and went to Standford University. In 1930, John got married to Carol Henning. John was married three times and had two children. Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. Steinbeck passed away eight years after being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

3: La Paz | Back in the 1800s, the Mexican Indians lived in little huts while everyone else lived in town. The Mexican Indians were very poor, and lived on the beach.

4: Kino - Juana's husband and father of Coyotito

5: Juana - Kino's wife and the mother of Coyotito

6: The doctor who reused to take care of Coyotito at first.

7: Coyotito - Son of Kino and Juana

8: Chapter 1: At the beginning, Kino and his wife both wake up. Kino notices a scorpion right above the baby. The baby shakes the rope, then the scorpion falls. The baby is stung by the scorpion. Juana tries to take care of the baby, and go get the doctor.

9: Chapter 2: Juana and Kino paddled their way out to sea in the canoe. Kino slipped into the water to look for oysters. Kino ended up finding a great pearl in one of the oysters. Happiness fills Juana and kino once they realized how the big the pearl was.

10: Chapter 3: Everyone found out about Kino finding the great pearl. Juana and Kino saw their future in the pearl, but they did not know how everyone else felt about it. One person broke into their house looking for the pearl. Kino killed the intruder once he realized what the man was trying to do.

11: Chapter 4: Everyone was talking about Kino finding the pearl, and selling it. Juana and Kino tried to sell the pearl, but they were not successful. Someone attacked Kino that night because of the great pearl. Juana and Kino decided to leave for the capital in the morning so they could sell the pearl.

12: Chapter 5: Juana tried to steal the pearl, and throw it back in the sea, but she not succeed. Kino was attacked by more people once again. Kino killed someone trying to defend himself. They had no choice, but to leave.

13: Chapter 6: Juana and Kino realized people weer looking for them. They went into the mountains trying to lose the trackers. Kino killed all the trackers searching for them, but they killed his son thinking it was an animal. Kino finally threw the pearl back into the sea.

14: Theme/Moral: I think one of the themes of the novel is that you can not always trust you vision. Another theme of the story, is that having nice things can not make everything better. You shouldn't let everything get to your head because you have something really nice.
