1: Oprah Gail Winfrey was born in the poor rural town of Kosciusko, Mississippi on January 29, 1954. Oprah was born into the life of a unmarried teenager, Vernita Lee. After Winfrey's birth her mother moved to north and left her for six years to stay with her poor grandmother. Her grandmother taught her how to read before the age three. Her grandmother always took her to a local church, where she was nicknamed "The Preacher" for the ability to recite Bible verses. At the age of 6 Winfrey moved to an inner-city neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her mother. After that at the age of nine Winfrey stated that she was molested by her cousin, her uncles, and a family friend. At 13, after suffering years of abuse, Winfrey ran away from home. At 14, Winfrey found her self pregnant with her son that shortly died after birth.
