FC: Power to the People! An Anthology of Poems and Thoughts
1: FOREWORD This book was created and illustrated by the third and fourth graders of my homeroom These children have a keen ability to search the world around them and recognize the injustices within it. Their ability to think critically about the world is an inspiration. My hope is that they will take this ability with them into adulthood and become the "change-makers" in this world. Mrs. Miller
2: Our class chose the Black Panther Party for Self Defense for our leaders of study for three reasons. The Black Panthers fought for liberty, change, and justice for all. For example, they protested against police brutality in Oakland, CA. They also had a sense of community. They began a free breakfast program for kids in a church called St. Augustine. The Black Panthers paved the way. They inspired the Chicano movement and Asian rights movement. These are the three reasons why we know the Black Panthers are honorable leaders of study. Power to the People!

16: The Black Panther are a political party that was founded in 1966. Bobby Seal and Huey P. Newton formed the Black Panthers so they could make a change to our government. The Party was founded in Oakland, CA. They were originally named The Southern Democratic Party. Their symbol was a black panther. A newspaper reporter falsely identified them as the Black Panthers and the name stuck. On October 15, 1966, Newton and Seal drafted the first version of the Ten Point Star which established the goals of the party. The goals of the party were to determine the destiny of the black community, quality education, housing, peace, to have an immediate end of police brutality, and justice for all people. At their height, the Black Panther Party had 800 members. The Black Panthers dissolved in 1982 because J. Edgar Hoover destroyed the Black Panther Party by assassinating their leaders, spreading rumors, and arresting them.
